Donald R. Gilbert

May 6, 1962 — June 1, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Donald R. Gilbert, who departed this world on June 1, 2026, at the age of 64. Born in the close-knit community of Harlan, Kentucky, on May 6, 1962, Donald's life was a testament to love, service, and the enduring bonds of family. Donald was the cherished son of Gordon Gilbert and Doris Kovac, both of whom have predeceased him, alongside his loving step-parents, Alene Gilbert and Jo Kovac. He was also preceded in death by the love of his life, Carla Hopson, whose memory he cherished deeply. Donald leaves behind a legacy of love through his surviving family members, including his ex-wife and best friend, Karen Tate, who remained a steadfast companion throughout his life. He was a devoted father to his children, Candice Swanson and Chris Gilbert (fiancé Nakita), and a proud grandfather to his most beautiful granddaughter, Scarlett Swanson. His life was further enriched by his siblings, Margaret Hornsby, Shirley Gilbert, Russell Gilbert (wife Debbie), Edward Gilbert (wife Janie), and Elmer Gilbert (husband Allen), along with many nieces, nephews, and close friends who will miss his presence dearly. A proud alumnus of James A. Cawood High School, Donald furthered his education at Southeast Community College, where he obtained an Associate's Degree. His commitment to service was exemplified by his 15-year tenure in the U.S. Navy, where he served with honor and distinction, including during the Persian Gulf War. Donald was a man of simple joys and passions. He delighted in the company of his loved ones and cherished visits to various tourist attractions, bringing joy and laughter wherever he went. A child at heart, he found immense pleasure in building Legos and playing games, always eager to share these moments with family and friends. A service to celebrate Donald's life will be held on June 2, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Henson & Rich Funeral Home. In honor of Donald's memory and in lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the GoFundMe account set up by his daughter, Candice, to assist with final arrangements. As we gather to say our goodbyes, we remember Donald for the warmth, kindness, and unwavering love he bestowed on all who knew him. While our hearts ache with his absence, we take solace in the memories we shared and the lasting impact he made on our lives. Rest in peace, dear Donald, knowing you were deeply loved and will be forever missed.
