Donald Paul Barfield
June 14, 1947 — April 28, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Paul Barfield, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who departed this world peacefully on April 28, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on June 14, 1947, in St. Louis, Missouri, Donald lived a life rich with love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
Donald was born to Ivory Leopold and Najee Barfield, and was raised alongside his sisters, Aubrey Jean and Ernestine, who have all predeceased him. He is now reunited in eternal peace with his daughter, Dawn, and son, Willie. Donald's legacy continues through his devoted wife of 58 years, Audrey, their children Paula, Tony, and Karrish, and a vast and loving family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. His family was the pride and joy of his life, and his love for them was boundless.
Education was an important facet of Donald's life. He was a proud graduate of Beaumont High School, having started his academic journey in the schools of St. Louis with institutions like Dunbar Elementary. His commitment to service was exemplified through his honorable eight-year tenure with the United States Marine Corps, where he served his country with valor during the Vietnam War. Donald's dedication earned him a Purple Heart and a National Defense Service Medal, along with the Expert Badge as a Rifleman. His stories from those days, particularly his self-proclaimed sharpshooting skills, were legendary in family circles.
Professionally, Donald was a man of many talents. He held various roles, from a machine operator at Anheuser Busch to a truck driver with the forestry department, and even worked in carpentry for many years. His work ethic was matched only by his passion for life and adventure.
Donald, affectionately known to many as "Slim," was a man of striking presence. His tall stature, deep voice, and characteristic "resting angry face" could be intimidating, yet those who knew him understood the warmth and generosity that lay beneath the surface. He had a unique ability to make others feel like family, often "gaining" more children and grandchildren along his life's journey. Donald was a man of his word, known for his strict demeanor that was always laced with unconditional love.
His love for fishing was well-known, a passion he passed on to his great-grandson, creating cherished memories on the water. Yet, perhaps his most favorite pastime was frequenting the local casino on Friday nights, a place he fondly referred to as "home."
Donald Paul Barfield was a man of character and conviction, a "stubborn and mean old man" as he might humorously have described himself, but one whose love knew no bounds. His life was a testament to strength, service, and the enduring power of family.
The Barfield family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Cotten Branch Memorial and Greater Grace Church for their support and services. A special thank you to all family and friends who have shared in celebrating Donald's remarkable life.
Though he may have left this world, the spirit of Donald Paul Barfield will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. May he rest in eternal peace.
