Donald Nelson Steward, a beloved father, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Memphis, TN, on May 25, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on November 23, 1944, in Ridgley, TN, to the late William and Murlan (Brown) Steward, Donald was the youngest of 12 children and the last surviving member of his immediate family. His departure marks the end of an era, but the love and joy he shared with those around him will continue to resonate for generations. Growing up in a bustling household, Donald learned early on the value of family and the power of music. These values would guide him throughout his life, culminating in a career that intertwined his love for melody and rhythm with his innate gift for connecting with people. Donald proudly served his country in the United States Navy, where he found camaraderie and honed his skills as a musician. His service not only exemplified his dedication and discipline but also provided him with opportunities to share his musical talents with fellow servicemen, creating bonds through shared songs and harmonies. Music was Donald’s lifelong passion. A talented guitarist and an emotive singer, he brought joy to countless gatherings, whether in intimate family settings or larger community events. His mastery of the harmonica added a soulful dimension to his performances, making each rendition uniquely his own. For Donald, music was not just an art form but a language through which he communicated love, joy, and solace. He leaves behind two cherished daughters, Stephanie Bastin of Lebanon, TN, and Sharon Seltzer of Jacksonville, FL, who were the light of his life and his proudest achievements. Donald also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, including Judy Westpy, JoAnn Rupp, and Hazel Morgan, all of whom held a special place in his heart and will forever carry his legacy forward. Donald’s life was a testament to the power of music and love. His gentle spirit and infectious laughter will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His family takes comfort in the knowledge that his melodies will continue to echo through the lives he touched. In keeping with Donald’s wishes, a private ceremony will be held to celebrate his life. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Halls Funeral Home for their compassionate assistance during this difficult time.
