August 3, 1956 — March 1, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Michael Johnson, a beloved husband, stepfather, grandfather, and friend. Born on August 3, 1956, in the heart of Iowa, Don lived a life rich with love, laughter, and dedication until he peacefully departed on March 1, 2026, surrounded by the comforting presence of cherished family and friends. Don was the adored son of Don and Sandy Johnson, who instilled in him values of kindness, integrity, and compassion. He was predeceased by his loving parents and his dear sisters, Dawn and Lori Johnson, with whom he shared countless joyful memories and an unbreakable sibling bond. After graduating from Montgomery High School in 1974, Don pursued a noble path in public service. He dedicated many years to the City of San Diego, where he worked tirelessly as a firefighter, courageously serving his community and neighbors with unwavering commitment and bravery until his well-earned retirement. His selflessness and professionalism left an indelible mark on the lives he touched, and he will forever be remembered as a true hero to many. In 2006, Don married the love of his life, Kimberly, with whom he shared two decades of companionship and unwavering devotion. Together, they built a life filled with adventure, laughter, and shared dreams. As a devoted stepfather to Katie and Emily and a doting grandfather to two beautiful grandchildren, Don’s nurturing spirit and boundless love created a family foundation that will endure for generations. Beyond his professional life and family, Don was known for his vibrant spirit and zest for life. An avid fisherman, he found peace and solace in the quiet of nature, casting his line into the water with patience and joy. He was also a formidable opponent on the ping pong table, where he was known to "beat the pants off you" with a twinkle in his eye and a competitive spirit that brought smiles to all who played against him. Don’s life will be celebrated at a memorial gathering on Sunday, April 22, 2025, from noon until four in the afternoon at La Bella’s Italian Restaurant, located on Third Avenue in Chula Vista. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Don are invited to join in sharing stories, laughter, and love as we honor a truly remarkable man. Though his physical presence will be profoundly missed, the legacy of Donald Michael Johnson’s kindness, courage, and love will continue to illuminate the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing him. As we say goodbye, we carry forward the lessons he taught us, the warmth he shared, and the unyielding love he gave to all. May he rest in peace, forever remembered and cherished in our hearts.
