Donald Lee Schuh
December 7, 1953 — May 15, 2026
Donald Lee Schuh, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on December 7, 2026, in Isabel, South Dakota, Don was a beacon of kindness and dedication to all who knew him. Though his life was unexpectedly brief, it was filled with love, laughter, and a remarkable dedication to family and community.
Don was the beloved son of Norman and Viola Schuh. His early years were spent in the picturesque town of Isabel, where he cultivated a love for the land and an appreciation for hard work. After graduating from McIntosh High School in 1972, Don pursued higher education at Black Hills State University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Education with a major in Math in 1976.
Don's life was marked by service and commitment. He dutifully served on the County Weed and Pest Board in Corson County for a decade, and his faith was a cornerstone of his life. As an active member and Trustee of Peace Lutheran Church in Isabel and later a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Rapid City, Don found joy and solace in his spiritual community.
His career was as diverse as it was fulfilling. In his youth, Don worked on a neighboring farm and with the State Highway Department, skills that laid the foundation for his future endeavors. While attending college, he began a fruitful stint with Whitewood Post and Pole, which lasted six years. Don's dedication to education was evident in his role as a middle and high school teacher for six years, where he inspired countless young minds.
Together with his beloved wife, Mary Lou, Don embarked on several entrepreneurial ventures. From farming and ranching to owning Dairy Queen franchises in Livingston, Montana; Spearfish, South Dakota; Pulaski, Wisconsin; Castle Rock, Colorado; and Belle Fourche, Don's business acumen was matched only by his integrity and warmth. In 2008, they relocated to Cape Coral, Florida, where they purchased a tree service, which they sold in 2013, marking Don's retirement.
In his retirement, Don discovered a passion for woodworking and home remodeling. His proudest project was the restoration of a charming old barn on a farm they purchased in Vermont, a testament to his love for renewal and craftsmanship.
Above all, Don treasured his family. He found immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren, particularly during their cherished walks and hikes on various trails. His gentle spirit and generous heart made him a beloved figure in their lives.
Don's family shares a heartfelt message: "We are forever grateful for the Forgiving Lord God who watched over Don throughout his life. His forgiving wife, family, and friends, along with the wonderful pastors who offered guidance, enriched his journey. Don's gratitude for their support and love was boundless."
Donald Lee Schuh leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and resilience. His life, though short in years, was rich in experiences and relationships that touched many. As we remember Don, we celebrate a life well-lived and a spirit that will continue to inspire us all.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made in Don's memory to Peace Lutheran Church in Isabel or St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Rapid City, reflecting his enduring commitment to his faith and community.
