In Loving Memory

Donald K Shurtliff
January 16, 1936 — September 11, 2017
It is with profound sadness and heartfelt love that we announce the passing of Donald K. Shurtliff, who left this world on September 11, 2017, at the age of 81. Born in the humble town of Roberts, Idaho, on January 16, 1936, Don's life was a testament to resilience, love, and enduring kindness.
The son of Frank Shurtliff and Florence Delma Knapp, Don grew up embodying the values of hard work and sincerity instilled in him by his parents. After serving his country honorably in the US Air Force, Don found his calling as a dedicated railroad engineer for Union Pacific Railroad, where he contributed 36 years of exemplary service. His work was not just a job, but a testament to his unwavering commitment and work ethic—a legacy that continues to inspire those who knew him.
Don was not only defined by his career but also by his passions and pursuits. An avid collector, his love for coins and stamps was matched only by the joy he found in sharing these hobbies with others. His collections were more than mere possessions; they were stories, histories, and memories lovingly curated over a lifetime.
To those who knew him, Don was a beacon of light and laughter. His quick wit and infectious smile had a magical way of lifting spirits and bringing joy to all around him. Don never met a stranger, and his natural ability to bring happiness to others was a gift he freely shared. He taught us all the importance of kindness and the profound impact of a simple smile.
Family was at the heart of Don's world. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Karen Payne Shurtliff. He is survived by his devoted wife of the last ten years, Janice Wood, who brought love and companionship into his later years. Don leaves behind his Son, Eric and two daughters, Kaylan Fry and Lisa Ketchum, and grandchildren Joshua, Zachary, and Ember. Though his grandson Jaiman preceded him in death, Don's legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, who carry forward the spirit and warmth he embodied.
As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, we hold on to the memories and lessons Don imparted. His courage in the face of kidney and heart issues, his ability to find joy in simple pleasures, and his unwavering love for family and friends will forever remain in our hearts.
A celebration of Don's life will be held in private at his graveside at Riverside Cemetary, Strerling, Colorado, honoring his wishes and the extraordinary life he led. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, in remembrance of a man who gave so selflessly to others.
Rest in peace, dear Donald. Your life was a blessing, and your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
