July 27, 1946 — April 4, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Donald James Veit, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Donald, fondly known as Don, was born on July 27, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and peacefully departed this life on April 4, 2026, surrounded by his cherished family.
Don was the treasured son of the late William Robert Veit and Algenora Mary Veit, who instilled in him values of kindness, integrity, and a zest for life. He was also predeceased by his brother, Kenneth, and nephew Kenneth Jr., who remained close to his heart throughout his life.
Don's journey began in the vibrant city of Philadelphia, where he graduated from Upper Dublin High School in 1964. Following his graduation, Don proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1967. He attained the rank of Sergeant while stationed in Aviano, Italy, where he was trained as an air traffic specialist—a role that would shape the course of his career.
In 1976, fate brought Don to Meridian, Mississippi, where he met the love of his life, Joyce. Their love story blossomed, and they would have celebrated 48 years of marriage this July. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams.
Don's professional life took him to the bustling airways of LaGuardia International Airport in East Elmhurst, New York, where he worked as an air traffic controller until 1981. His calm demeanor and unwavering dedication ensured the safety of countless travelers. Later, he joined FedEx as a courier, a role he embraced until his retirement in 2000.
A man of deep faith, Don was an active member of Advent Lutheran Church, where he found solace and community. His gentle spirit and warm smile left an indelible mark on the congregation, and he was cherished for his willingness to lend a helping hand and listen with an open heart.
Don's passions extended beyond his professional life. An avid reader, he found joy in the written word, exploring worlds and ideas with every page he turned. His love for gardening and nature brought him peace and a connection to the earth, with his garden often bursting with life and color. Don was also a true dog lover, never meeting a canine companion he didn't like.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by his beloved wife, Joyce; his children, Daniel (Mandy) and Michelle (Jeff); and his adoring grandchildren, Blythe (Blake), Julian, Hendrix, and Siobhan. His nieces, Tracey Jansen and Marcia Leckner, will forever cherish the memories they created with their dear uncle.
As we say goodbye to Don, we celebrate a life well-lived and a soul that touched the hearts of many. His memory will forever be a guiding light for those who were fortunate to know him, reminding us always to live with kindness, embrace our passions, and cherish the bonds of family and friendship.
A memorial service will be held at Advent Lutheran Church to honor Don's life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice in Don's name, as a tribute to his generous spirit and his enduring impact on the world around him.
