Donald James Priebe

A cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Don passed the bonds of this earth on July 1, 2026, at the age of 89. Born May 15, 1937, in Estherville, Iowa, Don was the son of Raymond and Madeline Priebe. He grew up in a family that instilled in him the values of hard work, dedication, and humor. In 1955, Don graduated from Sentral Community School in Fenton, Iowa. He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Navy from 1955–59. His service continued as he embarked on a career with the Iowa Conservation Commission in 1965, where he worked as a Game Warden in Black Hawk County. It was here that he formed enduring friendships with John, Jim, Dick, Bernie, Monte, and many others. Later, Don moved to Southwest Iowa, settling in Shenandoah, where he continued his distinguished career until his retirement in 1997. In retirement, Don found joy in the simple pleasures of life—gardening and fishing at the family's cabin in Minnesota. He was a man of many talents, known for his quick wit and captivating storytelling, often leaving friends and family in fits of laughter. His love for the outdoors and expertise in the kitchen were passed down to his sons, Ken (Deb) Priebe and Jim (Ronda) Priebe, who cherish the lessons he taught them, especially when it came to preparing fish and wild game. Don was a devoted supporter of veteran organizations, Ducks Unlimited, and the NRA, reflecting his love for his country and the natural world. His life was a testament to the values he held dear: family, friendship, and a deep appreciation for nature. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jacquelyn Schmidt, his daughter Jolene Headrick, his granddaughter Tiffany Headrick, and his great-grandson Archer Priebe. He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: brother Carl (Anna) Priebe and sisters Barb (Jim) Schmidt and Darlene (Keven) Brace, sons Ken and Jim, seven grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Birchview Gardens in Hackensack, Minnesota, and Moments Hospice for the compassionate care they provided to Don. Their kindness and willingness to listen to his many stories, even the ones they had heard before, meant the world to him and his family. Don's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His stories, laughter, and love for life will be cherished forever.
