Donald J. Sayah

Donald J. Sayah, a beloved member of the Altona community, passed away on September 9, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on December 18, 1942, in Altona, New York, Donald lived a life full of love, service, and quiet strength. The son of Irving and Helen (Murphy) Sayah, Donald was raised on his family's fourth-generation farm, which was established in 1869. This upbringing instilled in him a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors—a passion that remained with him throughout his life. He found joy in hunting, gardening, birdwatching, and hiking daily on his family's farm property. An avid Dodgers fan, Donald rarely missed a game and was a familiar face at local baseball fields, cheering on youth teams. Donald's life was marked by service; he spent six years in the Army as an Armor Crewman, earning recognition as a decorated Vietnam Veteran. Upon returning home, he dedicated 37 years to Georgia Pacific as a machine operator, where his work ethic and commitment were both respected and admired. A man deeply rooted in his community, Donald was active in the Holy Angels Church and could often be found participating in community and church events. His dedication extended to the Altona Volunteer Fire Department, where he served for 35 years. As a member of both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, he continued to exemplify his commitment to service and camaraderie. Donald was a man of few words but possessed a silent strength and compassionate heart that left a lasting impression. His generous spirit and unwavering integrity were the cornerstones of his character, earning him the respect and affection of all who knew him. He was a devoted companion to Shirley Mock for nearly 40 years, sharing countless treasured moments with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Donald is survived by his daughter, Holly (Robert) Clark; his grandchildren, Brandi (Jeremy) DeLeo, Kris (Kristina) Clark, and Chelsea (Dustyn) Clark; and his great-grandchildren, Kailee, Paisley, Charlie, Gavin, and Karson. He is also remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, his son's lifelong friend, Danielle and best friends Alvin and Joel. He joins in rest his parents, Irving and Helen Sayah, his brothers Irving Jr. and Gerald, his sisters Evelyn Ryan, Doris Fagan, and Sr. Elizabeth Sayah, and his son, Michael Sayah. A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Donald's life. A celebration of life is being coordinated and the details will be shared at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to St. Ann's Shrine in Alburgh, VT, a place that held special significance to Donald. Donald J. Sayah will be remembered as a man who lived with dignity, loved with depth, and served with honor. His legacy of kindness and integrity will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.
