Portville, New York – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald J. Hennings Jr., who departed this world peacefully at his home on July 10, 2026, after a brief illness. Born on November 12, 1954, in Buffalo, New York, Don was a man whose life was characterized by generosity and love. Don was the cherished son of Donald J. Hennings Sr. and Barbara A. Wittenburg. He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Louise Hennings, Fred and Barbara Wittenberg, and his dear sister, Barbara Comstock. His legacy lives on through his family, including his two daughters, Mindy (Josh) Henderson of Randolph, NY, and Michelle Hennings of Portville, NY, and his son, Mike Neal of Portville, NY. He is also survived by his sisters Cathy (Barry) Case of North Carolina and Kelly (Mike) Van Buskirk of Portville, NY, as well as his stepbrother, Buddy Wittenburg. Don leaves behind a special friend and neighbor, Joel Young, whose companionship he treasured. Don was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. After graduating from Richburg High School in 1973, Don embarked on a fulfilling career at Dresser Rand in Olean, NY, where he dedicated many years of hard work before retiring. His commitment to his work was matched only by his dedication to helping others, a trait that defined him in both his professional and personal life. An active member of the Portville American Legion and Street Masters. His passions extended beyond these affiliations, as he found joy in fishing and hunting with his father during his younger years. Don was also an enthusiastic cook and baker. Don's appreciation for nature and animals was evident in his everyday life. He was happiest when surrounded by loved ones or lending a hand to those in need. His candy apple red 1948 Ford coupe was a labor of love, often showcased at car shows and parades. He also cherished the simple pleasures of camping trips with family and friends. Those who knew Don will remember his sharp wit, infectious humor, and the warmth with which he welcomed everyone into his life. He was a man who would give you his last dollar without hesitation, embodying true generosity and kindness. In honoring Don's memory, the family kindly suggests donations be made to Rescue Pups at 3073 Pangburn Road in Friendship, NY as a testament to his lifelong commitment to helping animals. As we bid farewell to a wonderful man, let us celebrate the life of Donald J. Hennings Jr., a devoted father, brother, grandfather, and friend. May his spirit continue to inspire and his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
