It is with deep sorrow yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Donald Gerode Howard, who departed this earth on February 26, 2026, at the age of 71. Donald, a beloved son, father, grandfather, and friend, succumbed to a sudden heart attack, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, love, and unwavering devotion. Born on February 6, 1955, in the vibrant city of Charlotte, North Carolina, Donald was the cherished son of Phillip and Emily Watkins, who survive him. Throughout his life, Donald embodied the values of hard work, humor, and kindness, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His parents, Phil and Emily, instilled in him a strong sense of community and faith, shaping the man he would become. Donald dedicated 20 commendable years to serving his country in the United States Army, where his courage and discipline were reflected in every task he undertook. Following his military service, he continued his commitment to national security as a Department of Defense contractor for 15 years, where his expertise and integrity were highly valued. Away from his professional life, Donald found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid golfer, often spending sunny afternoons perfecting his swing and sharing laughs with friends on the course. His love for DIY projects was evident in the countless hours he spent improving his home, each project a testament to his patience and creativity. Donald was a cherished member of the New Creation Christian Fellowship, where his faith flourished and his dedication to helping others was unwavering. He leaves behind a family that adored him: his children, Gretchen Alphabet, Jeremy Howard, and Candace Terrell, who each carry forward his spirit and values. His legacy extends to his seven grandchildren, who were the lights of his life, each visit filled with shared laughter and lessons in kindness. Though he did not have great-grandchildren, the love and wisdom he imparted to his grandchildren will undoubtedly echo through generations.
