Donald Gene Burchfield
January 23, 1931 — June 1, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Donald Gene Burchfield, a cherished soul who left this world on June 1, 2026, at the age of 95. Don, as he was affectionately known, was born on January 23, 1931, in the serene hills of Monroe County, Tennessee, to Aaron Sr and Nell Burchfield. His gentle spirit and unwavering love for family and friends touched all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Don's life was a testament to love, hard work, and dedication. On February 2, 1951, he wed his beloved Mildred Burkett in Maryville, Tennessee. Together, they shared 69 years of joy and companionship, a union that served as a beacon of love and commitment until Mildred's passing. Don now rejoins her, his parents, and his brothers Hubert (Hub), Glen, Roy, and Aaron Jr (Frog) in eternal rest.
A proud veteran, Don served his country with distinction in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he was a valued member of the Mortar Unit. His sense of duty and courage were evident not only in his military service but also in his professional life. For over 40 years, Don drove trucks for Power Equipment Company in Knoxville, transporting heavy equipment with precision and care. Even after his retirement, his passion for the road led him to drive charter buses, a role he embraced enthusiastically for several years.
A man of deep faith, Don was a devoted Christian who cherished his church communities. He was an ardent member of Maryville Baptist Tabernacle, and later, The Pentecostals of Apopka in Florida, where he formed lasting friendships and shared his love for music. Don's musical talents were a gift to all, as he played his Martin limited edition guitar and banjo, delighting in the sounds of bluegrass and southern gospel music. His performances in church and local nursing homes brought joy and comfort to many.
Don's life was rich with the love of his surviving family: his devoted daughter, Donnita Jeter (Skip); granddaughter, Brandi Rayburn (Chad); and great-grandchildren, Madison and Cole Rayburn. His brothers, Pete, Sonny (Linda), and Rick, along with his brother-in-law Bill Burkett, nieces, nephews, and countless friends, will forever cherish his memory.
Family gatherings were always a highlight for Don, who reveled in the company of loved ones, sharing meals and the joy of music, especially when singing with his daughter and granddaughter. His warmth, kindness, and generosity of spirit were the hallmarks of a life well-lived.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Greg McKinney, a dear friend who watched over Don's Tennessee home during his time in Florida, and to Greg’s grandson Jeb for maintaining Don's yard. Your kindness and care meant the world to Don and his family.
As we say goodbye to Don, we celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, music, and faith. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he will be dearly missed. May he rest in peace, reunited with those who have gone before, and may his music continue to resonate in our hearts.
