It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of Donald Edwin Magnus, who peacefully departed this world on May 9, 2026, at the age of 88. Don was surrounded by his cherished family at Confluence Health Hospital, leaving behind a legacy rich in love, laughter, and learning. Born on April 28, 1938, in the quaint town of Ellensburg, Washington, Don was the beloved son of the late Edwin Julius Magnus and Ethel Marian Magnus. He was predeceased by his devoted parents, who undoubtedly welcomed him into their loving embrace once more. Don's journey through life was marked by his unwavering commitment to education and his profound faith. A proud alumnus of Garfield High School in Seattle, Washington, he graduated in 1956, later earning a degree from Western Washington University in 1963. His passion for teaching led him to a 30-year career as an educator in the Belfair and Renton School Districts, where he inspired countless young minds. Known as a beloved, award-winning teacher, Don forged meaningful connections with many former students, who often transformed into lifelong friends. In the winter of 1960, Don's heart found its true home with Marjorie Luann Magnus, his inseparable best friend and beloved wife. They were married on December 17 in Mercer Island, Washington, embarking on a 65-year journey that epitomized the beauty of unwavering companionship and love. Don was a man of many talents and interests; a true Renaissance man. With an affinity for construction and a knack for tinkering with cars, he spent his leisure hours creating and perfecting. His adventurous spirit led him to explore the wonders of Europe and the American Southwest, yet his greatest pleasure was found in the laughter and warmth of family gatherings, particularly at the cherished family retreat, Harmony Heights. Don's life was a testament to his Christian faith, a commitment made during his teenage years and held steadfastly throughout his days. His quick wit, infectious smile, and hearty laughter were a balm to all who knew him. Ever ready with a joke to lighten the mood, Don’s greatest gift was his genuine love for others. His kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on the hearts of family, friends, students, and even the tenants he warmly regarded as extended family. He is survived by his devoted wife Marjorie Luann Magnus; his loving children, daughter Susanne Lynn Magnus Sortor and her husband John Stanley Sortor, and son Jon Eric Magnus; his treasured grandchildren Gavin Neil Sortor and his wife Natasha, Leyna Janelle Sortor Williams and her husband Jonathon Williams, and Alexis Nicole Sortor Conner and her husband Brendan Conner. Don's legacy continues through his great-grandchild, whose presence embodies the continuation of his family's love and values. A celebration of Don's life will be held on June 20, 2026, at 1:00 PM at The Foothills Community Center, located at 1312 Maple Street. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Confluence Hospital, whose respectful love and attention made Don's final days more bearable. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made to educational charities, honoring Don's lifelong dedication to learning and teaching. While he may have left this earthly realm, Don's spirit will forever reside in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His laughter echoes still, a reminder of a life beautifully lived and a soul profoundly loved.
