Donald E. "Don" Bortz
October 11, 1944 — April 8, 2026
In loving memory of Donald E. Bortz, who peacefully departed this world on April 8, 2026, at the age of 81. Surrounded by the love of his cherished wife and daughters, Don left us from his home with a legacy of warmth, kindness, and service that will forever remain in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Born on October 11, 1944, in Cleveland, Ohio, Don was the beloved son of Donald and Pauline "Alma" Bortz. He was preceded in death by his devoted parents and his brother, Jerry, who no doubt welcomed him with open arms.
Don's journey was one marked by dedication and courage. He bravely served his country during the Vietnam War, answering the call of duty with a commitment that would later shape his life of public service. Upon returning home, he embarked on a distinguished 30-year career with the Ferguson, Missouri, Police Department. As a police officer, detective, and member of the Major Case Squad, Don was admired and respected for his unwavering dedication to protect and serve his community. His quick wit and warm smile made him a friend to many, and his acts of kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on countless lives.
Love was the cornerstone of Don's life, as evidenced by his enduring marriage to his beloved Vicki (Jones). On December 26, 1966, they sealed their vows in St. Louis, Missouri, and together they built a beautiful life raising three wonderful daughters: Kristin Gunn (Ben), Dana Anderson (Matt), and Jeri Ham (Brandon). His family was his pride and joy, and he was a devoted grandfather to nine grandchildren: Keaton, Clarissa, Carly, and Kiley Bruegenhemke, Tanner Gunn, Hayden and Landon Pfeiffer, and Aaron and Aidan Anderson, who will forever cherish the memories of their beloved "Papa Don."
Don is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Vicki, his cherished daughters, his adoring grandchildren, and his siblings Judy Martin (George), Robert Bortz (Lee Ann), and Jane Lutes (Rick). Each of them carries forward his legacy of love, service, and laughter.
A celebration of Don's life will be held on April 20, 2026, with a Visitation from 10:30am-1:30pm at Baue Funeral Home, located at 3950 West Clay Street in St. Charles, MO. Additionally, there will be a funeral service there at 1:30, followed by the burial at the neighboring St. Charles Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a gathering at his home. Message a family member for the address. We will honor a life well-lived, sharing stories of a man who touched so many with his warmth and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Backstoppers, an organization close to Don's heart, which supports families of fallen heroes.
Donald E. Bortz will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him, and his legacy of service and kindness will continue to inspire us all.
