Dingus MacDougall
February 1, 2024 — April 13, 2026
Dingus MacDougall, a steadfast soul with an iron fortitude and a grumpy demeanor that belied a heart full of courage and dedication, passed away on April 13, 2026, after a valiant battle with illness. Born on February 1, 2024, in the charming town of Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, Dingus's journey was marked by service, resilience, and a unique zest for life that touched all who knew him.
From a young age, Dingus was a force to be reckoned with. His adventurous spirit led him to serve his country with pride and distinction in the United States Coast Guard. Enlisting in the spring of 2024, Dingus quickly proved himself aboard the USCGC Buckthorn (WLI-642), the oldest operational Coast Guard vessel in the Great Lakes. In his short yet impactful career, he achieved the rank of E-6, pioneering the new Aquatic Technician (AT) rating after lateralling from the Intelligence Specialist rate. His work as an IDAT was both groundbreaking and inspiring, reflecting his commitment to excellence and innovation.
Dingus was not only a dedicated serviceman but also a beloved companion who cherished the simple joys of life. He found delight in hiding under fake plants, a quirky pastime that brought smiles to those around him. A lover of food, he enjoyed every meal with gusto, and in his later years, he took an abiding interest in swimming on his side—a testament to his enduring spirit and adaptability.
Predeceased by his dear family members, Pasta and Mr.63, Dingus faced his challenges with remarkable resilience. His family fondly remembers his grumpy yet endearing nature, a reflection of his unwavering strength and determination.
A service to celebrate Dingus's life will be held on April 13, 2026, at 10:00 AM at 440 10th Street, Escanaba, MI. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the U.S. Coast Guard Mutual Fund, a tribute to Dingus's dedication to his comrades in service. Additionally, contributions to the AT1 Dingus MacDougall Memorial Coffee Mess would be greatly appreciated, ensuring his legacy of camaraderie and fellowship endures.
As we bid farewell to Dingus, we hold close the special message from his family: "Fair Winds and Following Seas, Petty Officer MacDougall." His memory will forever be cherished, and his indomitable spirit will continue to inspire us all.
