It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of DeWayne Louis Hempelmann, who departed this life on May 24, 2026, at his home, following a courageous battle with Familial Pulmonary Fibrosis. DeWayne was surrounded by the warmth and love of family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, service, indomitable spirit, and unwavering faith in God.
Born on July 23, 1946, in Washington, Missouri, DeWayne was the beloved son of Ludwig William Hempelmann and Josephine Katherine Hempelmann nee' Schnakenberg. Raised in a nurturing home, he was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Dr. L. Dean Hempelmann, and his sister, Roberta Meyer. He now rests in peace, leaving behind his devoted wife, Peggy Ann Hempelmann nee' Gay, along with nieces, great nieces, great nephews, and countless dear friends who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
DeWayne and Peggy embraced a beautiful journey together, married on June 2, 1968, in Rosebud, Missouri. Just shy of their 58th anniversary, their bond was a testament to love and partnership, filled with adventure, laughter, and unwavering support for one another.
A dedicated educator, DeWayne graduated from Owensville High School in 1964, pursued his passion for teaching at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska, earning a Bachelor's Degree in 1969, and completed his Masters in Education from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1975. His career led him to inspire young minds at a Lutheran School in Hutchinson, Kansas, and later as an Elementary Teacher and Principal in The Washington School District, Washington, Missouri. He continued his teaching journey in The Anchorage School District until his retirement in 1996, leaving an indelible mark on countless students and colleagues.
DeWayne's patriotism and dedication to his country were evident during his service in the United States Air Force from 1971 to 1975. Stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska and Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska, he was honored with The United States Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service and the Air and Space Commendation Medal.
His faith and community were central to his life, evident through his active involvement at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rosebud and Anchorage Lutheran Church in Anchorage. DeWayne was also a proud member of the Anchorage Education Association, the National Education Association, and the Military Railroad Club.
Beyond his professional and community commitments, DeWayne found joy in the great outdoors. An avid fisherman, hunter, boater, hiker, and gardener, he also delighted in woodworking, birding, and traveling. His quick wit, warm smile, and playful teasing brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.
In honor of his life and legacy, donations may be made to The DeWayne Louis Hempelmann and Peggy Ann Hempelmann nee' Gay Endowment at Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska, supporting students pursuing Church and Medical related careers.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who offered their support, sent cards and letters, and visited during this difficult time. Special thanks to Pastors Dave and Tony, our wonderful neighbors, Monica Wright, MD, for her unwavering support, Dr. Gregory Gerboth, and the Compassus Hospice Group from Providence Medical Center.
