DeVaughn "Jake" Yarbrough, born on November 1, 1971, in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family, including his beloved son, Josh. Jake's life was a testament to resilience, dedication, and love, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Jake was the treasured son of Johnny Smith and Hazel Yarbrough, both of whom preceded him in death, as did his beloved grandmother Blanche Yarbrough and his older brother Deon Yarbrough. He is survived by a large and loving family, including his children Josh and DeVaughn, and 40 adoring grandchildren who were his pride and joy. Jake was supported by his siblings DeMarco, Demetrius, DeWanda, Dewayne, Denise, and Duboris (affectionately known as Pete), as well as his devoted Aunt Queen, who served as the matriarch of the family. Though he and Angela, his former spouse, parted ways, they shared a connection through their family.
Jake pursued his education with enthusiasm, graduating from Jacob A. Riis Elementary School and Collins High School in 1991, before furthering his studies at Columbia College. His career was marked by dedication and service, beginning with the Chicago Police Department, where he served his community with honor. An ambitious entrepreneur at heart, Jake also worked with the Indiana Packing Corporation, where his innovative spirit thrived.
His life was also enriched by his commitment to his faith and his community. Jake was an active participant in the Muslim community, and he proudly walked in the Million Man March, a testament to his dedication to justice and equality.
Outside of his professional and community endeavors, Jake was a man of diverse interests. He found joy in dancing and traveling, always appreciating the beauty and complexity of the world around him. An aficionado of premium imported cigars, Jake relished in the simple pleasures of life, sharing laughter and stories with those close to him.
