Born on July 7, 1970, in Tyler, Texas, Derrick was a cherished son, brother, father, and friend. His journey was one filled with love, laughter, and a deep dedication to his family and community. Derrick was the beloved son of Melva Jordan Cherry and Earl McElroy, who nurtured his growth and instilled in him the values that would guide him throughout his life. He attended Dunbar High School and several other FWISD schools, forming friendships that would last a lifetime. Derrick's commitment to building a secure future led him to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he completed his education at Job Corps. There, he honed his skills in building maintenance, a field where he demonstrated remarkable dedication, craftsmanship, and integrity. Family was the cornerstone of Derrick's life. As a devoted father, he found immense joy in his children: Felicia Annette Jordan, Diamond Renae Jordan, and Troy Smith. His heart swelled with pride and happiness with the arrival of his three grandchildren: Samaria, Jayda, and Serenity, who filled his days with light and laughter. Derrick shared a profound bond with his siblings: ZsaZsa Scott (James), Tyrina Jordan Armstrong, Sylvester Jordan, and Robert Carter Jr. (Nikki). He also held a special place in his heart for his Godfather, Robert Carter Sr., whose guidance and love were ever-present. Known for his warm spirit, quick wit, and unwavering loyalty, Derrick was a beacon of quiet strength and generosity. His deep love for his family and friends was evident in all he did, and his legacy will live on through the values he instilled, the memories he created, and the countless lives he touched. Derrick is predeceased by his beloved daughter Felicia Jordan and his dear Aunt Evelyn Carter, whose memories he cherished deeply. He is survived by his loving mother, Melva Cherry, his daughter Diamond Jordan, his son Tre Smith, his sisters ZsaZsa Scott, Tyrina Armstrong, and Nanice Traylor, his brother Robert Carter, and his treasured grandchildren. Derrick leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will forever remember his kindness and the joy he brought into their lives. A celebration of Derrick's life will be held on August 15, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Johnson Chapel Church. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in honor of Derrick's generous spirit.
