It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Derek A. Levay, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, who departed this world on May 12, 2026, at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY. Born on April 14, 1977, in Malden, Massachusetts, Derek lived a life full of purpose, kindness, and devotion to those he loved and the community he cherished.
Derek was the cherished son of Valerie Levay and the late Vilmos Levay, whose memories he held close and whose legacies he honored in all his endeavors. He is survived by his sister, Desiree Monahan, her husband, Marc Monahan, and their children, Evan and Reese, who brought immense joy to Derek's life as his treasured nephew and niece. Derek's extended family, including numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, were a vital part of his world, and he valued each connection deeply.
A proud graduate of Columbia High School in 1995, Derek went on to further his education, earning associate degrees in Electrical Technology and Information Technology. His commitment to learning and personal growth was evident throughout his life, shaping a diverse and successful career. Derek served honorably in the United States Navy, a testament to his dedication and service to his country. In his professional life, he excelled as a lineman, a fire retardant specialist, worked in the precision environment of a computer clean room, and contributed to railroad maintenance, showcasing his versatility and strong work ethic.
Derek was an active and devoted member of the Grace Baptist Church in Troy, NY, for many years. His faith was a guiding light, and he found great joy in both worship and fellowship with his church community. Known for his quick wit and dry humor, Derek brought laughter and warmth to gatherings, cherishing every moment spent with family, friends, and fellow church members. His kind and compassionate nature was evident in his unwavering commitment to fighting for and protecting the needy, a cause close to his heart.
Outside of his professional and community endeavors, Derek was a passionate gamer and an avid reader, with a particular fondness for the Bible, related literature, and political discourse. He loved to cook and embraced an active lifestyle, enjoying long walks that allowed him to appreciate the world around him.
Derek's presence will be profoundly missed, but his memory will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him. In honor of Derek's life and legacy, the family requests that donations be made to the Grace Baptist Church in Troy, New York, 12180.
A celebration of Derek's life will be held later this month at the Grace Baptist Church in Troy, NY. Family, friends, and all whose lives he touched are invited to join in commemorating a life well-lived, filled with love, laughter, and unwavering faith.
