It is with profound sadness and admiration that we announce the passing of Derek A. Levay, a cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend, who left this world on May 12, 2026, at the age of 49. His departure occurred at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY, leaving a void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Derek was born on April 14, 1977, in the warm embrace of Malden, Massachusetts. He was the beloved son of Valerie Levay, who survives him, and the late Vilmos Levay, his father, who predeceased him. Derek is also survived by his loving sister, Desiree Monahan, her husband Marc, and their children, Evan and Reese, who brought immense joy to Derek's life as his nephew and niece. He is fondly remembered by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins who cherished him dearly. A proud graduate of Columbia High School's Class of 1995, Derek went on to achieve associate degrees in Electronics Technology and Information Technology, which set the foundation for his diverse career. Derek's professional journey was as varied as it was commendable; he contributed his skills as a lineman, a fire retardant specialist, in a computer clean room, and on railroad maintenance. Each role he undertook was approached with dedication and a commitment to excellence. For many years, Derek was an active and valued member of the Grace Baptist Church in Troy, NY. His faith was a guiding light in his life, and he found great joy and fulfillment in the community and fellowship he shared with his church family. He was known for his quick wit and dry humor, traits that endeared him to all who had the pleasure of his company. Derek's kindness and compassion were boundless, and he was always a staunch advocate and protector of those in need. Derek's personal interests were as varied as his career. An avid gamer and reader, he especially cherished time spent engrossed in the Bible and related books. He was passionate about politics and loved the art of cooking, finding peace and joy in creating meals for those he loved. Derek lived an active lifestyle, often seen walking for miles, finding solace and contemplation in the simple act of walking. In honor of Derek's memory, the family invites those who knew him to join in a celebration of his life at the Grace Baptist Church in Troy, New York, later this month. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Derek's memory to the Grace Baptist Church, Troy, New York, 12180, to continue the work and community that was so important to him. Derek's legacy of warmth, humor, and boundless love for his family, friends, and community will live on in our hearts. As we gather to celebrate his life, we find comfort in knowing that he is at peace, reunited with his beloved father, and watching over us with his gentle smile.
