Dennis Lee Hughes May 15, 1949 – July 4, 2026 Dennis Lee Hughes, 77, of Decatur County, Iowa, passed away peacefully with family by his side on July 4, 2026. Born on May 15, 1949, Dennis spent his entire life in Decatur County, where he built a life rooted in hard work and the outdoors. Dennis was born to Hollie and Kathryn (Durell) Hughes, who preceded him in death. A lifelong farmer, he dedicated his life to the land he loved. In later years, he also worked as a truck driver, always finding purpose in work. As a kid, Dennis and his sisters, Dianna and Peggy enjoyed their time wading in creeks, and hunting for buckeye. They enjoyed winter months by iceskating on the creeks. Dennis married Devra Sue South February 12, 1971, they were later divorced. To this marriage they had 5 children; Travis Lee, Todd Charles, Hillary Kate, Heidi Danielle, and Holly Luciell. The outdoors was where Dennis was happiest. Whether hunting, fishing, searching for arrowheads, target shooting, or taking his grandchildren for tractor rides, he found joy in sharing those simple moments. He was never one to linger indoors or sit still for long. If there was fresh air and open country, that’s where you’d find him. Dennis was preceded in death by; his parents, Hollie Hughes and Kathryn Hughes, his son, Travis Hughes, and his sister, Patricia Kay. He is remembered by his children: Todd (Chelsie) Hughes of Bella Vista, Arkansas; Hillary Weir of West Des Moines, Iowa; Heidi (Rusty) Hicks of Boone, Iowa; and Holly (Andrew) Rash of Van Meter, Iowa. Grandchildren: Morgan Thompson, Beckett, Arley and Joa Hicks, Maddox Kistler, Hattie and Clara Rash, and great grandson Bodhi Murray. He is also survived by his sisters, Diana Hughes of Collinsville, Oklahoma, and Peggy (Mickey) Ballard of Dewey, Oklahoma, along with extended family and friends.
