In Loving Memory of Denise Edwards Smith January 5, 1955 – July 13, 2026 It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Denise Edwards Smith, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who returned to the Lord on July 13, 2026. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 5, 1955, Denise was a beacon of joy and warmth, touching the lives of all who were privileged to know her. Denise was the cherished daughter of the late James and Mary Edwards and sister to her late sister, Deborah Crawford. She was predeceased by her ex-husband, Henry Emerson Smith, with whom she shared a memorable journey from high school sweethearts to lifelong friends, and her beloved son, Paul Henry Smith. A proud graduate of LaSalle High School's Class of 1974, Denise spent much of her life in the hospitality industry, where she was renowned for her culinary skills. Her talent in the kitchen was legendary, particularly her signature dishes of chili, goulash, beef stroganoff, and her famous "Miss a Meal." Denise's heart was as generous as her portions, and her home was always open to those in need of a warm meal or comforting company. Her grandchildren hold dear memories of holiday feasts and the sweet scent of Christmas cookies that filled her home each year. In her fifth decade, Denise embraced her natural inclination to care for others by becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. This career change was a testament to her nurturing spirit and desire to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Denise was a social butterfly, known for her infectious laughter and ability to brighten any room she entered. Whether she was dancing to her favorite tunes or embarking on travel adventures, her zest for life was palpable. A devoted friend, she was always willing to lend a helping hand, whether as a designated driver or a companion for life's errands and appointments. Denise leaves behind her loving children: Mike (Melissa) Smith, Michelle (Woodrow) Friend, and Shannon Smith. She was the adored grandmother to eight grandchildren: Anabelle Friend, Michael Smith, Paul Lemmon, Clayton Friend, Lucy Lemmon, Mason Smith, Woodrow Friend, and Tristan Friend. Her legacy of love and laughter continues through them. She is also survived by her dear brother, Dennis (Sandy) Edwards, and a host of nieces and nephews: Steve Edwards, Renee Knapp, Noel Crawford, Leah Edwards, Tera LaCava, Tonya Crawford, Nathan Crawford, and Morgan Edwards. A memorial mass to honor Denise's life will be held on September 18, 2026, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, located at 120 Church Street with internment at Lakeside Cemetery to follow. A pot luck Celebration of life will be held at the VFW on September 18 at 6pm for her final farewell. The family invites all those who knew and loved Denise to join in remembering her vibrant spirit and remarkable journey. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Denise's memory to the local Catholic or Methodist church or the Alzheimer's Research Association, reflecting her enduring commitment to care and compassion. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has shared cherished memories and stories of Denise, affirming the profound impact she had on so many lives. Special thanks are also extended to the faculty of Evergreen Living Center for their loving care and to her close friends who visited and brought joy to her days. Denise will be dearly missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire and guide us, forever cherished in the hearts of those she loved.
