In Loving Memory

Denisa Ruth Wilson Avery
May 29, 1949 — October 5, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Denisa Ruth Wilson Avery, a cherished soul who touched countless lives with her unwavering kindness and devotion. Born on May 29, 1949, in Englewood, New Jersey, Denisa was the beloved daughter of the late Jack and Willablanch Wilson.
Denisa's journey in education began with her graduation from Ohio State University and Mary Grove College, where she earned a Master's Degree in Education. Her passion for teaching led her to dedicate 25 years to the Patterson NJ Public School System, followed by 4 years in Bedford Stuyvesant, NY. She was not only a teacher but also a guiding light for many children as the Director of the After School Program at Kelly Temple Church of God In Christ in New York, where she also lent her voice to the choir for many years.
A devoted member of the Kelly Temple Church for over three decades, Denisa's faith was at the core of her existence. Known for her quick wit and feisty, straightforward personality, she was a beacon of love, often sharing scripture, kindness, and generosity with those around her. Her spiritual life was enriched by her role as a prayer warrior and intercessor, maintaining a weekly prayer group alongside Cookie and Sutrina, and drawing strength from the guidance of Elder and Sister Smith.
Denisa found joy in reading, teaching, and engaging in puzzles and brain games, which kept her mind sharp and inquisitive. Her life was a testament to the power of faith and the importance of nurturing the intellect.
Denisa was preceded in death by her devoted husband, James L. Avery, who transitioned in 2017, as well as her parents, siblings Jack Wilson Jr., David Thomas, Leonard Wilson, Douglas Wilson, Lillian Williams, Annie Wilson, and her brother-in-law, Minister Arthur Hadley. She is survived by her loving siblings, Dennis Wilson, Virginia Hadley, Elizabeth Scruggs, and William Wilson, who will continue to cherish her memory.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff and members of the Historical Kelly Temple Church of God In Christ for their prayers and support, Jones Funeral Home for their compassionate outreach, and the Englewood Hospital staff for their dedicated care.
A service to celebrate Denisa's life will be held on October 23, 2026, at 4:00 PM at Kelly Temple Church of God In Christ, located at 8 East 130th Street, New York, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Denisa's memory to a charity or organization close to your heart.
Denisa Ruth Wilson Avery's legacy of love, faith, and learning will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know her. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched, a guiding light reminding us of the beauty of a life lived with purpose and passion.
