It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Delores Delano Harris. Delores peacefully departed this world on April 9, 2026, at the age of 92, enveloped by the love and warmth of her family in her Philadelphia home.
Born on March 16, 1934, in the vibrant city of Philadelphia, PA, Delores was the cherished daughter of Lillian and Robert Whiting Sr. She was one of six siblings and was predeceased by her beloved parents, her brothers Robert Jr. and Charles Whiting, her sisters Lucille Peal (and brother-in-law William), Pearl, and Amelia Whiting, and her devoted husband, Garland L. Harris. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life.
Delores's life was a testament to love, strength, and resilience. She received her education in the Philadelphia Public School system, nurturing a spirit of determination and a thirst for knowledge. She shared a beautiful marriage with Garland L. Harris, a partnership that was built on love and laughter. Together, they created a warm and welcoming home, a haven for their family and friends.
Her career was marked by dedication and hard work. Delores contributed her talents to several esteemed institutions, including Devon Sweater Factory, Philco Ford, Whitman's Chocolates, Arthur Jackson Cleaning Service, and Frankford Country Club. In 2005, she respectfully retired from St. Joseph University, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and commitment.
Delores was an active and faithful member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, joining the congregation in 1952. Her involvement in the church community reflected her deep faith and commitment to serving others. Her vibrant spirit and spunky personality endeared her to all who knew her. She was well-liked and loved by many, always ready to "tell it like it is" with a twinkle in her eye.
Her passions included entertaining, cooking, dancing, sewing, and tending to her plants. Delores had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome, whether she was hosting a gathering or simply sharing a meal. Her home was always filled with warmth, laughter, and the aroma of delicious food.
Delores's legacy is carried on by her youngest sister, Armetine Whiting, her son Rodney (and daughter-in-law Vertell), her daughters Sharon Graham, Lisa, Garlenda, and Marquea (and son-in-law Eric Deloache), her 17 grandchildren—Cheron, Cherie, Tamika, Michelle, Norman, Edward, Janise, Kyle, Rita, Khalief, Jalisa, Rodneya, Rodney Jr., Keiara, Marquea, Raheem, and Chloe—and her numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, an extended family member Cheryl Robinson, and a cherished bonus son, Nate.
In her final years, Delores received home care services from her loved ones, a testament to the deep bonds and unwavering love that surrounded her throughout her life.
As we say our goodbyes, we hold on to the precious memories we shared with Delores. Her spirit will forever be a guiding light, reminding us of the beauty of a life lived with love, laughter, and unwavering faith.
