Della Mae Sterling Soileau
May 25, 1938 — April 12, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Della Mae Sterling Soileau, who departed this world peacefully at home on April 12, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on May 25, 1938, in the close-knit community of Elton, Louisiana, Della was a beacon of love, faith, and wisdom to all who knew her.
Della was the cherished daughter of Jimmy and Irene Sterling, and she was lovingly raised alongside her brothers, Winston, Roland, Wilton, and Curtis. Her formative years in Elton were rich with stories and experiences that she would carry with her throughout her life, eventually becoming the family's revered historian. Her vivid tales of "how things were in the old days" painted a tapestry of memories for her children and grandchildren, ensuring that the legacy of the Sterling family would never fade.
Her union with the late J.C. Soileau was one of deep love and partnership. Together, they built a life full of joy, overcoming the heartache of losing their daughters, Evelyn Jean Soileau and Cheryl Ann Wilson, and their grandson, Garrique Soileau. Della found strength in her faith, which was the cornerstone of her existence. An active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, she lived a life rich in spirituality, embodying the virtues of compassion and devotion. Her home was adorned with rosaries, bibles, crosses, and prayer books, testaments to her role as the family's prayer warrior.
Della's home was a sanctuary for her family, the hub of traditions, laughter, and shared meals. Her culinary skills were legendary, and her home-cooked meals were the highlight of family gatherings. These occasions were filled with warmth, love, and the delicious aromas of her kitchen—a place where her family could always find comfort and belonging.
She leaves behind a legacy of love through her surviving children, Carroll (Terry) Gobert, Lindy (Karl) Gatson, Donna (Donald) Mouton, and Roslyn (Larry) Harmon, and her brother Curtis (Rena) Sterling. Her spirit will also continue to shine in the lives of her 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, who were the lights of her life. Della was also a beloved aunt, cousin, and friend to many, whose lives were enriched by her kindness and generosity.
Though her absence leaves a void that can never be filled, Della Mae Sterling Soileau's life will forever be celebrated by those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her unwavering faith, her dedication to family, and her ability to make everyone feel cherished will remain in our hearts as a guiding light.
A service to honor Della's remarkable life will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she spent so many years in faithful service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, in memory of Della's devotion to her faith and community.
As we say goodbye, we find solace in knowing that Della is reunited with her loved ones who preceded her in death, resting in the eternal peace she so richly deserves. Her spirit will continue to inspire us, and her love will forever be a part of us.
