Deborrah V.B. Karim, a cherished educator, traveler, and beloved sister, passed away on January 4, 2026. Born on October 29, 1948, in the vibrant borough of Harlem, New York, Deborrah was the daughter of Alexander Scott Belcher and Bertha Louise Slaughter Belcher, who predeceased her. She is survived by her devoted sister, Emily, and her close-knit circle of friends, Pam, Carol, Di, and Jabu.
Deborrah, affectionately known as Debbie, was a woman of immense warmth and generosity. Her journey of learning began at Charles Evans Hughes High School, followed by her pursuit of higher education at Manhattanville University, formerly known as Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart. Her thirst for knowledge led her to further studies at both the City University of New York and Long Island University.
With a heart full of passion for education, Deborrah dedicated her career to teaching global studies at the Choir Academy of Harlem. There, she became a mentor to countless middle and high school students, imparting wisdom and inspiring minds with her stern yet compassionate approach to teaching. Her dedication to her students and her unwavering commitment to their success left a lasting impact on many lives.
Beyond the classroom, Deborrah's curiosity and love for the world led her on travels to the vibrant cultures of Ghana, Cote Ivoire, Burkina Faso, to the scenic vistas of the Caribbean, Germany, France, and the tranquil beauty of Indonesia. She cherished her time living in Spain and Japan, embracing the cultures and enriching her understanding of the world. Her travels were a testament to her adventurous spirit and her desire to connect with people from all walks of life. Her travels not only broadened her perspective but also enriched her teaching.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Deborrah remember her as a beacon of compassion and positivity. Her elegance and kindness resonated with everyone she met, and she was always ready to offer a listening ear or a helping hand. Family and friends recall her as a loving and caring daughter, a wise and thoughtful sister, and a steadfast friend to many. Her legacy of empathy and understanding will be cherished forever.
Though Debbie may no longer be with us, her spirit will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know her.
