Dean Hoel
July 13, 1946 — March 26, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of Dean Hoel, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many, who peacefully departed this world on March 26, 2026, at the age of 79. Born on July 13, 1946, in Portage, Wisconsin, Dean was the beloved son of Arthur and Mille Hoel, both of whom predeceased him along with his dear brother.
Dean's life was one of dedication, resilience, and unyielding spirit. After a long and challenging battle, he passed away pain-free, surrounded by his loving sons at the UW Hospital, a testament to the deep family bonds he cherished throughout his life.
A cornerstone in his community and beloved by those who knew him, Dean's career spanned over four decades as a dedicated and talented Engineer on the Railroad. His work was not just a job but a passion that he pursued with diligence and pride.
Dean's life was rich with friendships and pursuits that brought him joy and fulfillment. He had a profound love for the great outdoors, and his adventures often took him out west, hunting pheasants with friends who became like family. He reveled in the simple pleasures of life—cutting wood, playing on his tractor, and casting his line in the water for a quiet afternoon of fishing.
Even as the years brought challenges, Dean's resilience shone through. He was a fighter, facing the past seven years of health struggles with remarkable grace and never a word of complaint. His ability to brighten a room with his smile, even in silence, was a gift that touched the lives of everyone around him.
A man of community spirit, Dean lent his hands and heart to the Rio Food Pantry, helping whenever his health allowed. His kindness and willingness to give back reflected the deep compassion he held for those around him.
Dean is survived by his loving children, Dean (Jeanine) Hoel Jr., Tyler (Sue) Hoel, Heather (Matt) Weatherwax, Kimberly (Tom) Kehoe, and Sadie Hoel, as well as his sister-in-law. He leaves behind a legacy of three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the values and love he instilled in them.
His memory will also be cherished by his close friends Shettey, Bill Granger, neighbor Jim, and Jeana, whose companionship and support were a source of strength and comfort to Dean and his family.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to these special friends—Shettey, Bill, Jeana, and Jim—whose presence brought joy and solace to Dean's life over the years.
A service to celebrate Dean's remarkable life will be held at a location yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made in Dean’s honor to the Rio Food Pantry, a cause that was close to his heart.
Dean Hoel's life was a testament to perseverance, love, and community. As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, we hold onto the memories and lessons he imparted, knowing he will be deeply missed but forever remembered in our hearts.
