Dawn Marie Cordes

July 9, 1968 — September 11, 2026

Dawn Marie Cordes (née Merritt), cherished wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2026. Born on July 9, 1968, in Kankakee, Illinois, Dawn's life was a testament to love, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to those she held dear. Dawn was the cherished daughter of Donald and Rose (née Tauson) Merritt. She graduated from Clifton High School in 1986, and on July 12 of that same year, she married, Lorne Cordes. Together, they shared 40 years of marriage and raised four beloved children: Ashlee (Justin), Adam (Danielle), Amber, and Alyssa. Throughout her life, Dawn was a devoted mother and grandmother, treasuring each moment with her grandchildren: Lane, Jaxson, Reston, and RoseLynn, with another little one soon to join the family. Her family was her world, and she would move heaven and earth to ensure their happiness and well-being. Dawn's career was a reflection of her love for animals and her nurturing spirit. She worked as a veterinary technician and secretary, always finding joy in the care and comfort of her four-legged friends. Her passion for photography meant she was often found behind the camera, capturing the precious moments of life and the beauty of the world around her. A woman of quiet strength and gentle humor, Dawn had a knack for delivering perfectly timed "zingers" that brought laughter to those around her. Her love for animals extended beyond her career; she was known for bringing home strays that touched her heart. She showed western pleasure for years with her faithful horse, TJ, and was a dedicated 4-H leader from 1996 to 2012, adopting every child who shared her love for horses and animals. Dawn was also a member of the Mounted Security at the Chicagoland Speedway, where she enjoyed the simple pleasure of people-watching as she served her community. Her dedication to others and her vibrant spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Dawn is survived by her devoted husband, Lorne, her cherished children and grandchildren, her loving parents, Donald and Rose, her brother Shane Merritt, and numerous cousins and friends who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her dear Aunt Norma Meets and Uncle Joe Harrington. A celebration of Dawn's life will be held on October 17, 2026, at the Bourbonnais Church of Christ, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory and the joy she brought to so many. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice, in memory of Dawn's compassionate and giving nature. Dawn Marie Cordes will be remembered for her love, laughter, and the light she brought into the lives of everyone she touched. Her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
