January 31, 1953 — March 14, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of David Sowell on March 14, 2026, at the age of 73. Born on January 31, 1953, in the charming town of Paducah, Kentucky, David grew up surrounded by the love of his parents, Fred Sowell, Opal Scott, and Paul Scott, who predeceased him but whose spirits forever remained an enduring presence in his life. David's journey in life was marked by a dedication to hospitality, a field in which he excelled and left a lasting legacy. After completing his education at the University of Kentucky and subsequently at the University of Miami, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management, David embarked on a career that would see him touch countless lives. He began his professional journey with industry giants like Marriott and Le Meridien, before making his indelible mark as the General Manager of the Sutton Place Hotel in Chicago. For over two decades, David led with grace, embodying the very essence of a true hotelier, before retiring at the age of 60. In addition to his professional accomplishments, David was known for his quick wit and warm smile, often said to be the creator of the beloved "dad" jokes. His gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued was evident in every interaction, both in his career and personal life. His kindness and generosity were a testament to the man he was, touching the lives of many who were fortunate enough to know him. On December 4, 1982, David married Dee Sirles in a beautiful ceremony in New Orleans. Together, they shared 23 years of marriage and raised three incredible children: Cameron, Cody, and Savanna. Although their paths eventually diverged, David and Dee remained united in their love and devotion to their family. He cherished the time spent with his children and their spouses, Rosalba and Alena Sowell, and found immense joy in his role as a grandfather to his beloved grandchildren, Lily, Layla, Liam, and Isabella. His sister, Pam Sarles, also survives him, carrying forward the family legacy that he so dearly treasured. Beyond his career and family, David found solace and happiness in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid fisherman and a passionate cook, often delighting friends and family with his culinary creations. His love for spending time with family was a cornerstone of his life, creating memories that will be cherished for generations. In honoring David's life, a private funeral ceremony will be held, reflecting the intimate and caring nature he was known for. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Hotel and Lodging Association, an organization close to David's heart, through the 2026 AHLA Foundation Annual Giving Donation at donation link. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Ascension Alexian Brothers Hospice in Elk Grove Village, IL, for their incredible care and compassion, ensuring that David's final days were filled with dignity and peace. David Sowell's legacy of love, laughter, and hospitality will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. As we bid farewell, we celebrate a life that was truly a gift to us all.
