It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of David Rice, who departed this world on May 23, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on March 9, 1945, in Warren, Ohio, David was the cherished son of the late Charles and Ester (Bickerstaff) Rice. He was welcomed into eternity by his parents, his brother John, and his beloved wife, Joan-Ann Cambre, who predeceased him in 2019. David's journey through life was marked by unwavering dedication, love, and resilience. After graduating from The Ohio State University with a degree in chemistry, he answered his nation's call by attending Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning. He proudly served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army, stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, from 1969 to 1972. His service was a testament to his character, showcasing his leadership and commitment to duty. Returning stateside, David embarked on a distinguished career as a chemist in the coal and paint industries. His professional life was marked by a steadfast dedication to his craft, and he eventually found his true calling as a Scoutmaster and fundraiser for the Boy Scouts of America. David's influence extended beyond the workplace; he was a proud Eagle Scout who inspired countless young people to discover their potential and embrace the values of scouting. David's personal life was equally rich and fulfilling. After the passing of his first wife, Joan-Ann, he found love once more with his long-time friend, Sue Curry. They married on July 17, 2021, and together they shared a beautiful chapter of companionship and joy. David leaves behind his loving wife, Sue Curry Rice, and his devoted children: Steven (Melissa), Thomas (Erika), Wendy (Kendall), and Chris. His legacy is further carried on by his five adoring grandchildren: Henry, Alinea, Liam, and Sophia, who were the light of his life. A man of varied interests, David was an avid collector of coins and minerals and a passionate enthusiast of science fiction, especially the works of Asimov, Heinlein, and Burroughs. His love for the natural world was paralleled by his affection for animals, a trait that endeared him to all creatures great and small. Known for his corny puns and cat jokes, David's humor brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. David was a dedicated member of the Rock River Valley Gem and Mineral Society and an active participant at Liberty in the Spirit Church. His faith and community involvement were central to his life, providing solace and strength. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who supported David in his illness, allowing him to pass peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. A funeral service to honor David's life will be held at a date and time to be determined at Olsen Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations in David's memory may be made to a cause close to his heart, ensuring that his spirit of generosity and service continues to touch lives. David Rice will be remembered not only for his accomplishments and service but for the profound love he shared with his family and friends. His warmth, humor, and wisdom have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, dear David; your legacy will live on in the hearts of those you leave behind.
