June 6, 1960 — June 4, 2026

With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of David John Philpott, who left this world peacefully on June 4, 2026, just two days shy of his 66th birthday. His courageous battle with cancer came to an end, surrounded by the love of family and friends. David was born on June 6, 1960, in Tracy, California, to Johnny M. Philpott and Laverne Philpott, the beginning of a life filled with passion and dedication. David’s journey began in Tracy, where he graduated from Tracy High School in 1978 and went on to hone his skills at the Arizona Automotive Institute, graduating in 1980. His career was a testament to his dedication and love for family, as he worked alongside his father at Philpott’s Garage. Starting the business together in 1980, David took the helm in 2006, continuing a legacy built on hard work and integrity. David was predeceased by his father, Johnny M. Philpott, grandparents John and Virginia Philpott, and Frank and Marie Machado, as well as beloved aunts and uncles Pauline and Dan Derby, Margie and Benny Philpott, and Jack Philpott. He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: his devoted mother, Laverne Philpott; his brother, Steve Philpott (Georgeanne); his sister, Janet Pierson (Randy); his sons, Matthew Philpott (Brooke) and Justin Philpott (Courtney); his stepson, Lee Alegre (Adriana); his Godson, Tyler Cefalu; and his adored granddaughters, Peyton, Mattison, Layne, and Carsyn Philpott, with a new granddaughter expected on June 23, 2026. David is also survived by his nephews Steve Jr., Ryan Philpott (Lea), and Dennis Estes (Chevy); his niece Christine Pierson (George); great-nieces Tori Estes and Sutton Philpott; great-nephew Kane Philpott; and close cousins Ron Philpott, Doug Philpott (Tona), and Jamie Philpott Peterson (Dave). His extended family of cousins and numerous friends, who he considered family, will miss him dearly. David's life was as vibrant as the engines he loved to work on. A member of NASCAR since 1975 and the Tracy Elks Lodge, he founded the 5:05 Club, sharing his passion for cars and camaraderie. His love for racing began at 15, and he quickly became a legend, winning the California State Championship in 1977. He won back to back track championships at 99 Speedway in 1992 and 1993. He was runner up in 1994. His 225 career wins at Stockton 99 and a record of 13 consecutive victories at All American Speedway in Roseville stand as a testament to his skill and tenacity. Known affectionately as "Flipper" for his quick-witted gestures of flipping people off. David loved to tease and mess with people as it was all part of his charm. He was a fantastic mechanic, a fierce competitor, and a mentor who never hesitated to lend a helping hand or a car part. His humor and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone he met. A service to honor David’s life will be held on June 11, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Tracy Memorial Chapel, located at 5 W. Highland Ave., Tracy, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Kyle & Samantha Busch Bundle of Joy Fund, as Kyle Busch was his favorite driver after Dale Earnhardt. The Philpott family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Community Hospice and MG Home Care in Tracy for their exceptional care and compassion during David’s final days. His legacy of love, laughter, and horsepower will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
