DAVID JAMES HERRERA SR

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David James Herrera Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who departed from this world on August 29, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on July 25, 1939, in Alamosa, Colorado, David was the cherished son of Cesario and Ruth (Medina) Herrera. David's journey through life was marked by a deep love for his family and an unwavering commitment to his community. He was predeceased by his parents, Cesario and Ruth, his siblings Emily (Willie) Aragon, Vincent Mascarenas, Claude (Lorraine & Claudia) Herrera, Edward (Maria Loya) Herrera, Ted (Rebecca) Herrera, Tommy Herrera, Larry Homminga, his son David J. Herrera Jr., his grandson Antonio J. Herrera, and his granddaughter Juanita D. Vigil. He also joins in eternal rest his beloved in-laws, Juan and Cecilia (Cordova) Sena, along with eight cherished nephews and nieces, and his special best friends Carlos Romero, Pete Olguin, Isaac Atencio, and Leroy Montoya. David is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Patricia M. Herrera, whom he married on June 9, 1962, in a small outdoor ceremony in Pueblo, Colorado. Their union was a testament to love and partnership, blessed by the presence of their sponsors, Pete Olguin and Pauline Herrera. David was a proud father to Yvonne (Floyd) Vigil and Daughter in law Maria L. Herrera and a loving grandfather to Cesario, Mark, Claude, Vanessa, and Chelsea and David N Herrera. His legacy extends through his 23 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren, with another precious addition on the horizon. He is also survived by his sisters, Pauline (Herrera) Homminga and Elizabeth (Sister) Herrera. Brother in law Ernest & Margarita Archibeque of Tijeras, New Mexico. Survived by many nieces and nephews. Survived by many cousins. A proud graduate of Central High School and Barber College, both in the class of 1961, David dedicated over 35 years of his career as a respected barber at the Air Force Academy, Crown Barber Shop, and Brothers Barber Shop on Nevada. His work was not just a profession but an extension of his warmth and camaraderie with clients and colleagues alike. He also pursued electrical work as a hobby, showcasing his versatile talents. David's passion for life was evident in his love for fishing, hunting, and camping. An avid gold prospector, he was a lifetime member of the Gold Prospectors of Colorado Springs. His sense of humor, paired with a stern demeanor, was legendary among his family, who fondly recall his playful warnings about having eyes on the back of his head. A lifelong Catholic, David's faith was the anchor of his life, guiding him through every challenge with grace and resilience. In his final days, he was cared for by the compassionate teams at Hospice of Colorado Springs, Memorial Hospital on Boulder St., and the Center at Parkwest in Pueblo, Colorado, to whom the family extends their deepest gratitude, with special thanks to Andraya Vigil. In honor of David’s memory, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice. A private funeral ceremony has been held, and a celebration of David's life will be announced at a later date on social media and through personal messages. David James Herrera Sr. will be remembered for his strength, his love for family, and his unwavering spirit. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in eternal peace.
