David Evans Smith
March 2, 1953 — July 8, 2026
David Evans Smith, born on March 2, 1953, in the close-knit community of Panhandle, Texas, passed away unexpectedly at his home on July 8, 2026. With his sudden departure, we bid farewell to a beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend. He was 73 years old.
David was the cherished son of the late Douglas M. Smith and Mary Ruth (Evans) Smith. He grew up in Panhandle, where he forged lifelong friendships and developed a deep love for football. A proud graduate of Panhandle High School's class of 1971, David's athleticism and kindness left a lasting impression on those around him. He then attended the University of Arkansas, where he played for the Razorbacks, further nurturing his passion for the sport.
David's career as a licensed Aircraft and Powerplant Mechanic took him from the plains of Texas to bustling cities across the country. His journey began in Amarillo with Diamond Shamrock and Mesa Petroleum, and later led him to RJ Reynolds / Nabisco in Winston-Salem, NC, and Atlanta, GA. Despite the miles traveled and the places called home, Texas always held a special place in his heart, a sentiment he fulfilled in his retirement by returning to the state he loved.
In his personal life, David found immense joy in embracing his wife Carolyn's passions. Together, they shared a love for horses and dogs, and enjoyed the serenity of North Carolina's beaches. David also took pleasure in motorcycling, sailing a Hobie Cat, and the simple joys of outdoor life, such as biking with Carolyn from various camping locations. Perhaps humorously, he often voiced his mock complaints about the many hours spent mowing grass and pastures in North Carolina.
David is survived by his devoted wife, Carolyn K. McKim Smith, who was his companion in all of life's adventures. He also leaves behind his brother, Judge William Smith, and his wife Kaye Rene, along with many cherished nieces and nephews who admired and looked up to him.
His high school classmate fondly remembered David as "kind and very athletic," a testament to the warmth and energy he brought into every room. David's life, though unexpectedly cut short, was marked by a rich tapestry of experiences, friendships, and a profound love for family and the great outdoors.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor David's memory may consider making a donation to a charity of their choice, reflecting the generosity and kindness that David embodied throughout his life.
David Evans Smith will be dearly missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire and live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
