It is with profound sadness and cherished memories that we announce the peaceful passing of David Eugene Steelman, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and friend, who departed this world on October 19, 2026, in Moore, Oklahoma. Born on July 22, 1934, in Oklahoma City, David was the cherished son of John S and Hellen E Steelman. David was a man of many talents and passions, most notably his profound love for engines. He began his career as a mechanic at a family business, Steelman's Construction Co. David worked on earth-moving equipment and trucks. His dedication and skill soon led him to establish his own business, Steelman's Custom Engines, where he built custom race motors, a testament to his ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit. On December 26, 1956, David married the love of his life, Shirley Ryan, at Our Lady Catholic Church in Oklahoma City. Together, they shared 58 wonderful years of marriage until Shirley's passing in October 2014. Their union was blessed with four children: Kenneth D Steelman, Donna J. Ferguson, Gary D Steelman, and Sharon M. Reid, who survive him and continue to honor his legacy. David's life was filled with adventure and joy. In his youth, he was known for his quick temper, but as he grew older, he became a gentle soul adored by all who knew him. His humor and playful nature endeared him to his eleven grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as "Papa" and the "ole geezzer." An avid fisherman, David found solace in the tranquility of the water, often staying out all night with a fishing rod in hand. He also had a passion for motorcycle racing, square dancing, and bowling in his younger days. In his later years, he channeled his creativity into woodworking, crafting quilt and thread racks, as well as hundreds of car plaques that showcased his meticulous craftsmanship. David was predeceased by his devoted parents, John S and Hellen E Steelman, his beloved wife, Shirley Ryan Steelman, grandsons Kendale "Shane" Steelman, twin grandsons Floyd D Steelman and Gary D. Steelman, his sister Louise Thompson, and his best friend George Kuzmic. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, carried on by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his great great-grandchildren. A graduate of Mt. Saint Mary's high school and Oklahoma City University, David valued education and personal growth. He was a man of integrity, whose life was a testament to hard work, family, and community. A service to celebrate David's life will be held on October 27, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the John Ireland Funeral Home, located at 120 S Broadway, Moore, Oklahoma 73160. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Thunder Care Nursing and Rehab Center and Halo Hospice for their compassionate care of David in his final days.
