It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of David Derbis on May 13, 2026, in Duluth, Minnesota. Born on May 6, 1944, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, David was the beloved son of Helen Hudak Derbis and John Derbis, who preceded him in death, along with his brother and sister. He is survived by his devoted partner, Linda Peterson, who stood by his side, sharing in the joys and trials of life.
David's legacy lives on through his cherished children: Kale Derbis and his spouse Kendall, John Derbis and his spouse Katy, and Abra Browne and her spouse Ben. His nine grandchildren, Katherine, David, mNeya, Wylder, Oliver, Max, Margot, Sloane, and Zeph, were the light of his life, and he delighted in each of their unique spirits and accomplishments.
A proud alumnus of the University of Minnesota Duluth, David earned a Master of Fine Arts, a testament to his lifelong passion for the arts. His career as a counselor allowed him to touch countless lives with his empathy, wisdom, and understanding. However, it was his artistry that truly defined him. An accomplished musician and artist, David carried a business card that humbly and powerfully declared him as an “Artist,” a title that barely scratched the surface of his creative spirit.
David lived his life as a true merrymaker and troubadour, embodying the essence of the wandering storyteller, much like his hero, Woody Guthrie. His creative soul found expression in melodies, vibrant artwork, and the written word, culminating in his book, "Learning to Fly," a collection of lyrical stories that wove the tapestry of his life.
Heavily influenced by the Tao Te Ching and his own unique philosophy he called "Dude-ism," David's outlook on life embraced Eastern philosophies while navigating the realities of a capitalistic world. His approach was one of fortitude and grace, always choosing to engage with life’s beautiful potential. A passionate writer and deep thinker, David often found himself walking the line between the spiritual and the material, always seeking the path of servitude and joy.
David will be remembered for his warm heart, his unwavering kindness, and his ability to inspire those around him to see the world through the lens of beauty and possibility. His life was a testament to the power of art to heal, connect, and transform.
As we celebrate David’s remarkable journey, we invite all who knew him to join us in honoring his memory, sharing stories and songs that echo his indomitable spirit. David Derbis leaves behind not only a loving family and a legacy of compassion but an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to local arts programs, ensuring that David’s passion for creativity and community continues to inspire future generations.
May the music of David’s life continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
