David Cameron Oakley
May 2, 1964 — May 23, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of David Cameron Oakley, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully on May 23, 2026, at the age of 62. Born on May 2, 1964, in Henrico, Virginia, David was the cherished son of Roy and Joan Oakley.
David grew up in Henrico, where he developed an early appreciation for the rich history surrounding him. A proud graduate of Henrico High School, he carried his fervor for learning and discovery throughout his life. His deep love for the Outer Banks and his insatiable wanderlust led him on many adventures, where he soaked in the beauty of nature and the stories of the past. A true Civil War enthusiast, David visited numerous battlefields, immersing himself in the tales and lessons of history.
David's professional life was a testament to his versatility and dedication. For many years, he worked diligently in construction, crafting sturdy structures and nurturing a sense of accomplishment in his work. Later in life, he embraced a new challenge and embarked on a career as a pilot escort, guiding others safely along their journeys, much like he did in his personal life.
At the heart of David's world was his family. Though predeceased by his brothers, Bobby and Jerry, he found immense joy and pride in his surviving daughters, Paula (Mike), Megan (Cody), Kristeen, and Lexi (Alissa). His legacy of love and warmth continues through his eight beloved grandchildren: Nathan, Colin, Autumn, Jeison, Anna, Lukas, Lauren, and Riley. David shared a special bond with his former spouse and lifelong friend, Millie, who stood by him through life's many chapters.
Family gatherings were a cornerstone of David's life. He reveled in the laughter and camaraderie around the table, especially when playing his favorite game, Risk. His strategic mind and playful spirit often led to hours of enjoyment and cherished memories.
In his final days, David was surrounded by the compassionate care of the VCU Health nurses and staff, as well as the dedicated team at Richmond Coach. The Oakley family extends their deepest gratitude for the kindness and support shown to David in his last hours.
As we remember David Cameron Oakley, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with adventure, love, and an unwavering dedication to those he held dear. His journey on earth may have ended, but the stories he shared and the love he gave will echo in the hearts of those who knew him.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date, allowing family and friends to come together in remembrance and honor of a remarkable man who touched so many lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in David's memory to a charity of your choice, as a testament to the generosity and kindness that he exemplified throughout his life.
