David C. Pixley

June 30, 1939 — May 31, 2026

It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of David C. Pixley on May 31, 2026, at the Friendly Home of natural causes. Born on June 30, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, David was the beloved son of Emily and Henry Pixley, who now welcome him into a peaceful eternity, along with his dear sister, Dorothy Pixley Rothschild, and his cherished wife, Virginia Pixley. David's life was a testament to the power of curiosity, dedication, and love. He graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit and went on to earn his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Albion College, later pursuing graduate studies. His pioneering work in the 1960s with early computers, developing time-share systems for mainframe computers, was just the beginning of a remarkable career. David worked with Scientific Data Systems in Santa Monica, California, and later moved to Rochester to contribute to lens design at Bauch & Lomb. His entrepreneurial spirit flourished as one of the founders of Genesee Computer Center, which evolved into Genesee Survey Services, a successful Rochester corporation. A man of many talents and passions, David was deeply committed to his community and church. A longtime member of Henrietta United Church of Christ, he served as treasurer, led a youth choir, and participated in numerous committees. His dedication extended to education, as he was twice elected to the Rush-Henrietta school board, where he consulted on enrollment projections and school consolidations during times of demographic shifts. Music was the melody of David's soul. He shared his love for song by performing with church choirs, barbershop groups, and choruses such as the Genesee Valley Orchestra & Chorus, New Horizons chorus, and Eastman Rochester Chorus. His home was a sanctuary for music, hosting rehearsals and performances, a testament to his generosity and love for the arts. David was a world traveler with a penchant for adventure. His journeys took him to European countries on cruises, and his passion for race cars led him to tracks across the country and even to Monaco for IndyCar races. His zest for life and exploration was matched only by his devotion to his family. Always ready to lend a helping hand, David's love extended to his "Sunshine" family camp in the Smoky Mountains, where he cherished connections with his extended family. He is survived by his devoted partner, Laura Morrissey; his brother Richard Pixley and sister-in-law Susan; his children, Dawn Pixley (Jeremy Hawk) and Tom Pixley (Christine); and his beloved step-children, Debra Pregler (Bruce), Laura Wiegmann, and Kirk Harstead (Christina). David's legacy of love continues through his grandchildren, Erik, Bailey, Katrina, Anna, Adam, Casey, and Jack, who were his pride and joy. David was a philanthropist at heart, generously supporting musical, religious, and cultural groups within his community. His family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Wendy, his compassionate private care aide, and the kind staff at the Friendly Home, where he spent his final years in comfort and dignity. A service celebrating David's life will be held at Henrietta United Church of Christ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's memory to the Henrietta United Church of Christ and the Genesee Valley Orchestra and Chorus, organizations close to his heart. David C. Pixley leaves behind a legacy of love, music, and community service. While he will be deeply missed, his spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him.
