David A. Larson, Sr. November 22, 1935 – July 7, 2026 David A. Larson, Sr., age 90, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, military service, education, lifelong learning, and a wonderful sense of humor. Born on November 22, 1935, in Connecticut, David devoted his life to serving his country, advancing knowledge, and inspiring generations of students through his distinguished 45-year career as an educator. David was one of nine children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Larson and Elizabeth Murphy Larson; several siblings; and his beloved wife, Deborah Larson, a registered nurse who worked at Touro, who passed away when their only child, David Jr., was four years old. He is lovingly remembered by his surviving siblings and extended family. David proudly served in the United States Air Force, where he also taught fellow service members. His commitment to service, education, and mentorship became the foundation of a remarkable career that touched countless lives. Following his military service, David continued his pursuit of higher education, earning his master’s degree from Michigan State University and later earning his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the University of Maryland. He went on to become a respected professor of statistics, economics, and business. The two primary institutions where he served as a professor were the University of New Orleans and the University of South Alabama. Throughout his 45 years as an educator, David shared his expertise at many universities and institutions abroad, including those throughout Europe and Jamaica. He brought his passion for learning, teaching, and mentorship to diverse communities around the world, leaving a lasting impact on his students and colleagues. Throughout his career, David made meaningful contributions to his academic field, including the development of a statistical formula that has been recognized and utilized at Harvard University and other institutions. Beyond the classroom, David had a lifelong love of learning and an appreciation for an active lifestyle. He enjoyed tennis, baseball, and long bicycle rides. He believed staying active was important—and he was not one to let age convince him otherwise. He especially treasured sharing his love of sports with his family and took great pride in his son, David Jr., who played baseball at a very high level. Their shared love of the game created a special bond between father and son, built on David’s guidance, encouragement, and unwavering support. David is survived by his cherished son, David A. Larson, Jr.; his devoted daughter-in-law, Jennifer A. Larson, who lovingly cared for him during his later years; his grandchildren, David A. Larson III, Bailey D. Larson, and Hunter A. Larson; and his step-grandchildren, Heidi Brooke and Hana Sky. His family will forever cherish his guidance, the lessons he shared, his sense of humor, and the countless memories they created together. David’s greatest joy was his family. He cherished the memories created with his son, grandchildren, and loved ones. Known for his wisdom, kindness, quick wit, and humor, David had a way of making people smile while also teaching them something valuable. His laughter, stories, and dedication will forever remain a source of inspiration for those who knew and loved him. A private memorial service will be held at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort, Alabama, with attendance reserved for family and close loved ones. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy, condolences, and memorial contributions be directed to David Jr. in honor of his father’s legacy. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude for the thoughts, prayers, and support of all who knew and remembered David. His dedication to service, education, family, and the many lives he touched will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will live on through his family, his students, and all who benefited from his kindness, wisdom, humor, and unwavering commitment to helping others. Above all, he will be remembered as a loving father, mentor, teacher, storyteller, and friend whose memory will remain treasured forever.
