On July 13, 2026, the world lost a remarkable man, Darrel Melvin "Digger" Hanson, at the age of 89. Surrounded by love, Darrel passed away peacefully in his cherished home, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, humor, and steadfast dedication to both family and community. Born on May 6, 1937, in Wayne, Nebraska, Darrel was the beloved son of John and Tracy Hanson. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Dwayne Hanson, and his sister Jackie Kalenda. Darrel's journey through life was marked not only by his professional accomplishments but also by the deep and enduring love he shared with his wife, Dolores. The couple began their life together on June 12, 1957, in Gregory, South Dakota, crafting a beautiful story that spanned over 69 years. Their union was blessed with four children: Kevin (Debbie) Hanson, Kelly (Tracy) Hanson, Kirk (Linda) Hanson, and Kanice (Al) Aldridge. Darrel also leaves behind his brothers Joe and Monty Hanson, alongside a multitude of cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. A proud alumnus of Hahn High School in Wayne, Nebraska, Darrel graduated in 1955 before serving his country with honor as a member of the South Dakota Army National Guard, enlisting in 1961. His career path was as diverse as his interests, as he devoted his skills and passion to farming, carpentry, truck driving, and working as a high school custodian. Darrel's spirit of service extended beyond his professional life, as he volunteered for over 30 years at the Black Hills Speedway. Known for his role as a Sprint car push truck driver, he navigated the tracks with his trusted Dodge flatbed pickup, earning the admiration and respect of his community. A man of many passions, Darrel found joy in his John Deere tractors and heavy equipment, particularly his beloved backhoe. Whether hunting, fishing, camping, or riding his motorcycle through the breathtaking Black Hills, he embraced life with enthusiasm. His mornings were often spent with friends over coffee, sharing stories and laughter. Above all, Darrel treasured time with his grandchildren, imparting wisdom, and humor in equal measure. Renowned for his quick wit and playful one-liners, Darrel's humor was a beacon of joy to all who knew him. His legacy will be one of laughter, love, and the countless lives he touched along the way. A service to honor Darrel's life will be held on July 16, 2026, at 9:00 AM at the Black Hills National Cemetery, located at 20901 Pleasant Valley Dr, Sturgis, SD 57785. Following the service, a celebration of life gathering will take place, offering an opportunity for family and friends to share memories and celebrate the vibrant life Darrel led. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Darrel's memory. His family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have shared in his remarkable journey.
