She departed this life peacefully on September 7, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer, enveloped in the love of her family at home. Darlene's journey was defined by strength, grace, and an unwavering spirit that inspired everyone who knew her. Born to Christopher C. Hammond and Lena Julia Hammond, Darlene was predeceased by her cherished parents and her devoted husband, Lester C. Havis. She leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, survived by her sons, Quintus J. Hammond and Christopher P. Welsh, and her cherished grandchildren, Seth, London, and Trey. Her sisters, Linda Godboldo (Dale) and Betty Knott, and her brother, Christopher D. Hammond, will forever hold her in their hearts, along with her daughter-in-law, Mona Welsh, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Darlene's early years were spent in Detroit, Michigan, where she graduated from Northwestern High School. Her passion for education led her to a fulfilling career as a paraprofessional with Plano Independent School District (Plano ISD), where she dedicated many years before retiring. Her colleagues and students remember her as a compassionate and inspiring figure who touched countless lives. A gifted musician, Darlene was the lead singer of the Hammond Sisters during her teenage years, captivating audiences with her powerful and beautiful voice. She had a passion for writing music and found joy in playing the piano, bringing warmth and harmony to all who were fortunate to hear her. Beyond her musical talents, Darlene was known for her wonderful sense of humor. Her quick wit and playful spirit lit up the room, leaving friends and family with smiles and laughter that will be cherished always. Her presence was a beacon of joy, and her ability to connect with others was truly remarkable. In honoring her memory, her family encourages donations to a charity of one's choice, reflecting Darlene's generous heart and unwavering kindness.
