Daniel L. 'Nordy' North

January 6, 1949 — March 9, 2026

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Daniel L. 'Nordy' North, who left this world peacefully on March 9, 2026, at the Richard L. Owen Hospice Home in Peoria, IL. Born on January 6, 1949, in Streator, IL, Dan was a beacon of light, warmth, and humor to all who knew him. The beloved son of the late Therlo and Margaret (Pitte) North, Dan grew up in Streator, where he attended St. Anthony's grade school and graduated from Woodland High School in 1968. Shortly after, he worked briefly at GTE before being drafted into the Army. Dan proudly served his country from 1969 to 1971, stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington State as a legal clerk in the Army 1st Signal Group. His dedication and service earned him the rank of Buck Sergeant, a rare honor for a two-year draftee who did not serve in Vietnam. In tribute to his patriotism, we invite those attending his service to wear red, white, and blue. After his honorable discharge, Dan returned to GTE and later found his calling at Vactor Manufacturing, where he worked until his retirement in 2011. Known for his colorful stories, Dan had a knack for turning any situation into an adventure, even as the colorblind foreman of the paint shop. His entrepreneurial spirit shone through when he opened Nordy's Tap, a local watering hole that became a cherished hub for friendship and laughter, and the birthplace of his famous "Gramma Nordy's Apple Pie." Dan was a man of many talents and passions—an accomplished baker and cook, a fantastic dancer, a skilled dart player, and a lover of the Vermillion River's serenity. He cherished his time on the water, finding peace under the sun and stars. His zest for life was matched only by his love for his family and friends, whom he adored with all his heart. Dan's life was marked by love and companionship. He married Nancy Redfern on June 10, 1969, and together they raised two wonderful children, Trever (Kristy) North and Jenna (Tony) Alwood. Though divorced in 1993, they remained dear friends. In 2015, Dan found love again with Cheri (Sirotnak) Studnicki, his devoted partner who stood by his side through life's joys and challenges. He is survived by his children, Trever and Jenna; his partner, Cheri; his brother, Carl North; his grandchildren, Taeli (Brock) Baughman, Lawson Alwan, and Kaylin Rients; and his great-grandchildren, Barrett and Piper Baughman. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Dan. Dan was predeceased by his parents, his grandson Dexton North, his sister Donna Schell, his brother Ken North, sisters-in-law Gloria and Judy North, and brother-in-law Paul Butz. A lifelong member of St. Anthony's Church and an active participant in the Eagles Club, VFW, and Vermillion Boat Club, Dan's faith and community involvement were central to his life. He will be remembered for his infectious laugh, his storytelling prowess, and his unwavering belief in living life to the fullest, guided by his mantra: "Eat when you're hungry, drink when you're thirsty, and sleep when you're tired." Friends and family are invited to celebrate Dan's life on March 20, 2026, at St. Michael's Church (formerly St. Anthony's) located at 407 South Park Street, Streator, IL 61364. The service will begin at 11:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dan's memory to support Catholic education at St. Michael's Catholic School in Streator, IL; St. Mary's School of Kickapoo in Edwards, IL; or Peoria Notre Dame High School in Peoria, IL. Dan's legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched. As we bid farewell to a truly remarkable man, we find comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to inspire us all.
