It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel E. Wojnowski Sr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, Uncle, brother-in-law, and friend, who departed this life on July 24, 2026. Born on January 6, 1937, at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, Dan spent 89 years enriching the lives of those around him with love, wisdom, and humor. Dan was the beloved son of the late Edward and Eva Wojnowski, and the younger brother of his predeceased sister, Nancy Raduha (née Wojnowski). He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Karen K. Wojnowski (née Lee), whom he wed on August 7, 1971, at the First Methodist Church in Buckley, Illinois. Their enduring partnership was celebrated with a reception at the church hall and at the Lee family farm. Dan's legacy lives on through his loving children, Danny and Joseph Wojnowski, and his dear sister, Margaret Perfect, and brother, David. His memory will also be cherished by his grandchildren, Mason and Logan, who proudly carry forward his zest for life. Although he leaves no great-grandchildren, his spirit will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations. A man of remarkable intellect and dedication, Dan's educational journey began at Saint Stanislaus Kostka Grammar School, where he was taught by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. He continued his studies at Holy Trinity High School under the Brothers of Holy Cross, before earning his bachelor's degree from Western Illinois University and two master's degrees from National Louis University. Dan's passion for education and his natural ability to connect with people led him to a fulfilling career as a teacher. He dedicated his life to nurturing young minds, teaching 6th grade in Palatine, Illinois, and for the United States Air Force in Newfoundland, Canada. His career spanned across various subjects, including Junior High Physical Education, Religion, Literature, and History. Dan also served as Assistant Principal at Saint Mary's of the Annunciation in Mundelein, Illinois, and taught CCD at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vernon Hills, Illinois, as well as in the Amish community in Ohio. In addition to teaching, Dan contributed two decades of service at the White Deer Run Golf Course in Vernon Hills, Illinois, where he also created cherished memories on the course. Although he modestly claimed not to play well, one of his proudest achievements was making an Eagle on the sixth hole. His love for golf extended to teaching his wife, Karen, who became a remarkable fourteen handicap player under his guidance. Dan's commitment to community and service was evident in his active participation in several organizations. He was a dedicated member of the Phi Sigma Fraternity, and he held numerous offices in the Mundelein/Libertyville Men's Garden Club. As a Eucharistic minister and board member at Saint Mary's of Vernon, Dan's faith was a guiding light in his life. He was also a proud member of associations such as the Illinois Physical Education Association, the Illinois Teachers Association, and the National Teachers Association. His advocacy extended to serving on the board of the Lake County Agriculture Society and holding several offices for the SEDL Deaf Parents Association. Dan further supported education as a board member for the MMSD Parent's Advisory Council at Gallaudet University. An outdoor enthusiast, Dan found joy in guiding students on canoe trips to the Boundary Waters in Canada, and he embarked on countless camping adventures across every state in the USA and province of Canada with his family. His fishing and hunting escapades with friends were legendary, and he took great pride in catching every species of fish in Florida. Dan's unique experiences included bagging two moose while working in Newfoundland. A man of many talents, Dan was fluent in American Sign Language and had a knack for picking up languages, including some Polish. Known for his quick wit and humor, a trait inherited from his father, "Funny Ed," Dan had a remarkable ability to engage with anyone he met. Dan loved to cook and enjoyed friends and family gatherings. Dan was also a life long supporter of the Fighting Irish.
