Dan Alan Kahl, a beloved partner, father, and friend, passed away on September 17, 2026, after a courageous battle with Type 1 diabetes. Born on June 22, 1950, in Sioux City, Iowa, Dan was the cherished son of Dan and Betty Kahl. He joins them in eternal rest, alongside his stepson, Scott Smith. Dan's life was marked by a deep love for his family and an enduring partnership with his life partner, Bonnie Smith, whom he met in 1980. Together, they nurtured a loving home and raised Scott and Michael Smith. Bonnie and Michael, along with Dan's brother Douglas and his wife Barbara, survive him, carrying on his legacy along with numerous nieces and nephews. A graduate of Central High School and a student of business courses at Western Iowa Tech, Dan's career began as a glass glazer for a major company in Sioux City. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-own Ming Auto Beauty Center, a venture that showcased his dedication and skill. In 1992, seeking new horizons, Dan relocated to Tucson, Arizona, where he embraced various roles until his retirement in 2016. Dan's life was vibrant with interests and passions. He was an active participant in the Sioux City 4 Wheelers Club, the Sioux City Corvette Club, and the Sioux Valley Kennel Club. Upon moving to Tucson, he continued his involvement with the local kennel club. His pride and joy were his 1972 Chevy Blazer and his 1977 Corvette, which he loved working on and taking for drives. Known for his quiet nature, Dan possessed a quick wit and a talent for delivering the perfect comeback, endearing him to all who knew him. His gentle humor and steadfast companionship will be deeply missed. In memory of Dan, the family suggests donations to the American Diabetes Association, an organization close to Dan's heart. The family also extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jonathan Insel, whose professional and personal care provided comfort and support throughout Dan's journey with diabetes.
