In Loving Memory of Dan McIntyre
Dan McIntyre, a devoted husband, father, and esteemed educator, peacefully departed this world surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. Born on July 12, 1945, in Ocala, Florida, Dan was the cherished son of Daniel Edison McIntyre and Elizabeth Vause McIntyre, fondly known as Eddie and Betty Lee. He now joins his beloved parents and son, Daniel Edward (Danny), in eternal rest.
Dan's journey of love and partnership began when he met Phyllis Howard during their graduate studies at Western Carolina University. They married on January 27, 1973, in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and shared fifty-three wonderful years together, during which they nurtured a beautiful family and embarked on numerous adventures across the United States and beyond. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Phyllis, and his loving daughter, Katie Gingrich, along with her husband, Chris Gingrich, who will forever cherish his memory.
A lifelong learner, Dan graduated from Thomson High School in 1963 and attended the University of Georgia. He later obtained his bachelor's degree in education and history from Augusta College in 1969. Passionate about shaping young minds, he began his career teaching and coaching in Georgia and North Carolina. In 1974, he earned his Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Western Carolina University, followed by a Doctorate in Educational Administration in 1985 from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Dan dedicated over four decades to the field of education, serving as a teacher, coach, principal, district administrator, and Superintendent of Schools across Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia. Known for his unwavering commitment to students and staff, he tirelessly worked to enhance educational systems, always advocating for fiscal responsibility and enriched curricula. His leadership left a lasting impact on every community he served.
A devout Presbyterian, Dan was an active member of his church, serving as both Deacon and Elder. His commitment to community extended beyond the educational realm, as he participated in organizations such as Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs, served on various community boards, and even coached Little League.
Dan's interests were as diverse as his talents. He enjoyed golfing with friends and had a passion for college football, especially as a fervent supporter of the Georgia Bulldogs. Despite his stern exterior, Dan's kind heart, generous spirit, and sharp sense of humor endeared him to many. He was a staunch defender of the underdog, driven by a lifelong goal to ensure every child received a quality education and a better life.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on September 26, 2026, at Brooksville Cemetery, located at 1275 Olmes Rd, Brooksville, FL 34601, United States. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Dan's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, as a testament to his enduring legacy of helping others especially children.
Though Dan's presence will be deeply missed, his spirit will forever inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love and gratitude of a life well-lived.
