Damon Gregory Shay

September 6, 1956 — May 11, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Damon Gregory Shay, a beloved son, brother, uncle, teacher, artist, and friend. Damon left us on May 11, 2026, at the age of 69, after a courageous battle in the hospital, where he died peacefully. He was born on September 6, 1956, in San Jose, California, to the late Cecelia and Len Shay. Damon was a beacon of light and joy to all who knew him, and his memory will forever remain in our hearts. Damon was a proud graduate of Soquel High School, class of 1974, and went on to further his education at San Jose State. His passion for creativity and nurturing young minds led him to a fulfilling career as a graphic artist and elementary school teacher in Monrovia, California. He was an active member of the Teacher's Union, where he served diligently and eventually held the position of president. His dedication to education and the arts was unwavering, and he inspired countless students and colleagues with his enthusiasm and commitment. Damon's greatest love was children, and this was evident in every aspect of his life. His infectious smile and quick wit made him not just a participant at gatherings but the very essence of the celebration. Known for his love of art, theater, cooking, skiing, and spending time with his family, Damon was a man of many passions. He had a special fondness for cats and a unique delight in creating and sharing 'jello' at family gatherings. Though Damon is dearly missed, he is now reunited with his parents, Cecelia and Len, his sister Margaret 'Pinky' Shay Higgins, and his brother Jack Shay, who predeceased him. He leaves behind his cherished partner, Heather Ferenz, and two beloved nephews, who will carry forward his legacy of kindness, humor, and love. A service honoring Damon's life will be held on June 11, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Douglas and Zook Mortuary, located at 600 E. Foothill Blvd., Monrovia, California. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Damon Shay Memorial Scholarship for the Arts, a tribute to his lifelong dedication to fostering creativity in young minds. The family and friends of Damon Shay extend their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Kaiser Hospital in Baldwin Park and Kindred Hospital in West Covina for their compassionate care during Damon's final days. Damon's vibrant spirit touched the lives of so many, and though he is no longer with us, his legacy will live on through the countless lives he enriched. He will forever be remembered as a loving and devoted soul who brought joy, laughter, and creativity to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
