Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor
February 27, 1932 — March 23, 2011
Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor, an iconic figure whose presence graced the silver screen and whose heart touched countless lives, passed away on March 23, 2011, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, following complications from congestive heart failure. Born on February 27, 1932, in Hampstead, London, England, Elizabeth was destined for a life of both brilliance and benevolence.
The daughter of Francis Taylor and Sara Taylor, Elizabeth embarked on her illustrious career at the tender age of ten with Universal Studios in the 1942 film "There's One Born Every Minute." Her undeniable talent and striking violet eyes quickly captured the world’s attention, and she soon became a beloved figure of Old Hollywood. Her career was marked by numerous achievements, including becoming the first female actress to earn a $1 million salary for her role in "Cleopatra." Despite a near-death experience while filming "BUtterfield 8," Elizabeth's resilience and passion for acting shone through in every performance.
Elizabeth's life was as colorful off-screen as it was on. She was married eight times over a span of 40 years to seven remarkable men, including Conrad "Nicky" Hilton Jr., Michael Wilding, Mike Todd, Eddie Fisher, Richard Burton, John Warner, and Larry Fortensky. She was predeceased by her parents, her first husband Conrad "Nicky" Hilton Jr., her third husband Mike Todd, and her fifth and sixth husband Richard Burton.
Family was a cornerstone of Elizabeth’s life. She is survived by her beloved children, Michael Wilding Jr., Christopher Wilding, Elizabeth "Lisa" Todd, and Maria Burton. Her legacy continues through her ten cherished grandchildren—Laela, Naomi, Tarquin, Caleb, Andrew, Lowell, Quin, Rhys, Eliza, and Richard—as well as her three great-grandchildren.
Beyond her cinematic achievements, Elizabeth was a devoted philanthropist, dedicating much of her life to the fight against AIDS. In 1985, she co-founded amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, in memory of her dear friend Rock Hudson. In 1991, she established the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation to continue her mission of providing direct care and financial support to those living with HIV. Her philanthropic efforts were supported by her passion for jewelry, often auctioning her magnificent collection to raise funds for these causes.
Elizabeth’s family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for the compassionate care she received. They also extend their thanks to Sally Morrison, her publicist, for her unwavering support during this time.
A private funeral service was held in accordance with her family’s wishes. For those who wish to honor Elizabeth’s legacy, donations can be made to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, based in Los Angeles, California.
Dame Elizabeth Taylor will be remembered not only for her extraordinary contributions to film but also for her indomitable spirit, her generous heart, and the enduring impact of her humanitarian efforts. Her light will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she touched.
