Cynthia Denise Hicks
May 2, 1966 — October 10, 2026
It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Cynthia Denise Hicks, age 60, on October 10, 2026, after a courageous battle with lung and heart complications. Born on May 2, 1966, in Atlanta, Georgia, Cynthia was a beacon of light and compassion to all who knew her.
Cynthia was the beloved wife of Michael Anthony Hicks, with whom she shared a beautiful marriage of over 32 years, having wed on December 2, 1994. Together, they raised two wonderful children: Xavier Anthony Hicks and Alexis Denise Hicks, who were the pride and joy of her life. Cynthia's unwavering love and dedication to her family were the cornerstones of her being.
A graduate of Joseph Emerson Brown High School in 1984, Cynthia went on to serve her community through her work at the Atlanta Journal Constitution for 13 years and later at the Georgia Professional Standards Commission for 12 years. Her professional career was marked by integrity, dedication, and a passion for excellence.
For nearly four decades, Cynthia was an active member of the World Changers Church International, where she found spiritual comfort and community. A breast cancer survivor, she exemplified resilience and strength, becoming an inspiration to many. She completed the Peachtree City Road Race twice, a testament to her determination and zest for life.
Cynthia had a deep love for books, movies, and true crime shows, with "Dexter" being a particular favorite. Her soul resonated with the melodies of neo-soul artists like Musiq Soulchild, Jill Scott, and Marsha Ambrosius. She was a culinary enthusiast, delighting in cooking and savoring pasta and cheese. Her greatest joy, however, was spending cherished moments with her family, celebrating birthdays and holidays, and enjoying the simple beauty of flowers and butterflies, especially black ones.
Her personality was defined by her empathy, understanding, and warmth, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met. Her husband, Michael, fondly remembers her as "loving, kind, and the bravest person" he knew. Alexis, her daughter, describes her as "a light" and "resilient beyond imagination." Cynthia's presence was truly a blessing, her smile a source of joy.
Cynthia is survived by her devoted husband, Michael; her beloved children, Xavier and Alexis; her mother, Nancy Copeland; her brother, Bernard Walker; her sister, Dot Copeland; her nieces, Chantell Denise Copeland and LaChan Demise Copeland; her nephew, Dylan Walker; and many extended family members and dear friends. She was predeceased by her father but is now reunited with him in eternal peace.
A service to celebrate Cynthia's life will be held on October 20, 2026, at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society - Breast Cancer Fund.
