It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Cornelia F. Chatman, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, partner, and friend. Cornelia departed this world peacefully on March 25, 2026, at the age of 79. Her life, filled with love, resilience, and a deep sense of community, will be celebrated at Gregory B. Levett & Sons, located at 4347 Flat Shoals Pkwy, Decatur, GA, on April 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Born on August 2, 1946, in Carrollton, Georgia, Cornelia was the cherished daughter of Willie Roy Florence Sr. and Luevencis Walker. She was preceded in death by her loving parents and brothers Willie Jr., Harold, and Calvin Florence, and her son, Stephen B. Smith. Despite life's challenges, Cornelia's spirit remained unbroken, and her heart continued to expand with love for her surviving family and friends. Cornelia's journey through life was defined by her dedication to her family and her community. She was a devoted mother to her sons, Mark Chatman and David Chatman, and a loving with Alex Wilhite. Her brother, Bennie Florence, and his wife, Mattie, along with her grandchildren Andrea Haigood, Briston, Brion, and Cornel-Phillip Chatman, and great-grandchildren Easton, Roman, and Eli, were sources of immense joy in her life. Cornelia's family also included numerous extended family members and friends who were touched by her kindness and generosity. Cornelia's academic pursuits led her to the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, where she earned a Master of Arts in Social Work. Her professional journey took her from Atlanta Gas & Light Company to the Atlanta Police Department, and later to Smith Transfer after relocating to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Cornelia's commitment to her work was matched only by her dedication to her faith. An active member of Greater Second Baptist Church, she sang in the choir and instilled a love of faith and community in her sons. Beyond her professional and community achievements, Cornelia was a woman of diverse interests. She had a profound love for reading, music, and crossword puzzles, all of which she passed on to her sons. Always humming a tune, her joy for music was infectious, and her home was filled with warmth and melody. Cornelia's small stature belied the immense love and care she carried within her, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Cornelia Chatman leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and compassion. Her life was a testament to the power of kindness and the importance of family. As we gather to celebrate her life, we remember her not only for the roles she played but for the love she shared with those around her. Her spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Greater Second Baptist Church in Cornelia's memory, ensuring that her legacy of faith and community support continues to thrive. As we say goodbye to this remarkable woman, let us carry forward her legacy of love and kindness, and strive to be as generous and caring as Cornelia was throughout her life.
