Columbus Ward

August 7, 1936 — October 5, 2026

Columbus Ward, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on October 5, 2026, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on August 7, 1936, in Aberdeen, MS, Columbus was the cherished son of Johnnie and Lumm Ward. He was preceded in death by his parents, his devoted wife Edna Maeweather Ward, his brother R.C. Ward, and his son Wille Maeweather. Columbus's journey began in the close-knit community of Aberdeen, where he attended school and developed a lifelong love of learning and connection. In 1981, he married Edna Maeweather, the love of his life, and together they built a family filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Their 26 years of marriage were a testament to their unwavering commitment to one another until Edna's passing in 2007. Columbus found fulfillment in his work as a machine operator at Penfield for 25 years and as a maintenance worker at Green Thumb for 20 years. His dedication and strong work ethic left a lasting impression on his colleagues and friends. A kind and giving soul, Columbus touched the lives of everyone he encountered. His warmth and generosity were evident in the way he lived his life, always offering a helping hand and a comforting word to those in need. Columbus leaves behind a loving family to cherish his memory: his devoted children, Jan (Pat) Reese, Vernice Maeweather, Alfred (Liz) Maeweather, and Henry Maeweather, and his daughter-in-law Jeanette, wife of his deceased son Willie Maeweather. He is fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Nate Maeweather, Miracle Williams, Shakaiah Maeweather, all of Syracuse, NY, and Tobias Reese of Finland, as well as a host of additional grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a special niece, Lawanda Walker, and a host of other nieces and nephews.

I’m Free

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free, I took His hand when I heard Him call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I found that peace at the close of day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah, yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full, I savored much, Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your hearts and peace to thee, God wanted me now; He set me free.
