Clifton Theodore Allen, Sr.

In loving memory of Clifton Theodore Allen, Sr., who peacefully departed this world on August 9, 2026, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. Clifton was born on August 27, 1944, in Bethania, North Carolina, to Norman Grey Allen, Sr. and Mamie Miller Allen. He was a man who lived a life rich with love, service, and laughter, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him. Clifton was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers, Clemmet Orlando, Norman Jr., and William Edward; and his dear sister, Alice Jean. He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his cherished wife of over fifty years, Selma Ballard Allen. Together, they built a strong and loving family that included their children, Clifton Jr. (Kim) of Bryans Road, Maryland, and Tamara of Huntersville, North Carolina. Clifton's memory will also be lovingly carried forward by his sister, Delores Hailstalk (Douglas) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; his six beloved grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; and his dear mother-in-law, Patsie Ballard, whom he affectionately called “Ma.” He also leaves behind a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, former students, colleagues, fraternity brothers, and a community enriched by his presence and dedication. Clifton's educational journey began at Carver High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, continued at Livingstone College in Salisbury where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, and culminated with a Master’s degree in School Administration and Supervision from East Carolina University. His commitment to education was unwavering, and he dedicated forty-four years to Halifax County Schools. Clifton began as a history teacher at Brawley High School and rose through the ranks to become a respected principal and central office administrator. Among his many achievements, he was particularly proud to have served as the first principal of Southeast Halifax High School, helping to lay its foundations and guide its growth. A proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Clifton valued the brotherhood and friendships he fostered there. He was also deeply connected to his faith, having joined Bethania A.M.E. Zion Church in Winston-Salem at an early age. His visits home were often highlighted by moments spent with his sister Alice Jean and watching his sister Delores sing in the choir. Clifton was a man of simple joys. A devoted Dallas Cowboys fan, he relished the camaraderie of a friendly family rivalry during football season. He found peace sitting by the water with a fishing rod in hand, sharing stories and jokes. Clifton also took immense pride in his garden, where he nurtured the earth and delighted in the fruits of his labor. His humor was legendary, and even in his final days, he brought smiles to those around him with his quick wit and cherished jokes. A celebration of Clifton's remarkable life will be held on August 22, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Cedar Creek Missionary Baptist Church, located at 6854 Old 125 Rd, Scotland Neck, NC 27874. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a man who gave so much love and laughter to the world. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Clifton's memory to a charity of your choice, honoring his lifelong commitment to education, community, and family.
